Seemingly plain and simple in design, the most important part of a posy ring, is the concealed inscription to the inner band which had great sentimental significance to the wearer and was intended to be hidden while touching the skin. From the Medieval era until the Wedding Rings Act of 1855, when hallmarking left little room for posy inscriptions, these rings were very popular, to the extent that jewellers held stocks of both plain posy rings waiting to be engraved on request and posy rings that were already engraved for those happy to choose from a selection of inscriptions. From the 17th century onwards, posy inscriptions tended to be engraved in Italics and composed in either Latin, French or English. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Marianna Head (circa 1742-1832) was the daughter of Anna Gay (1710-84) and Thomas Attwater (1691-1767) of Bodenham. Her grandmother, Jane Cator Gay (1680-1756) was the sister of the non-conformist diarist, Anne Cator Steele (1689-1760). Prior to her marriage, Marianna was very active within the Steele circle, writing all of her poetry between 1768-1770. She married George Head (d. 1785), a clothier from Bradford-on-Avon, in 1773 and with the exception of one hymn, her work did not appear in print during her lifetime. GOLD POSY RING, 17TH-18TH CENTURYEngraved inscription on the interior, Let not absence banish love, rubbed goldsmith's mark, ring size approx. L½Footnotes:The posy inscription inside this ring is noted as being from Arthur L. Humphreys' manuscript collection of posies (see Evans, Joan, 'English Posies and Posy Rings', London, 1931, p.67).The name, 'Posy' derives from 'poésie' the French word for poetry.

This device, known as a fede, (from the Italian 'mani in fede' meaning 'hands in trust') has been used in love rings since Roman times. The clasping of right hands, known as 'dextrarum iunctio', also symbolises friendship, loyalty and harmony. Fede and gimmel rings were intended as betrothal or marriage rings.
