Round hollowed out container carved from one piece of small hard wood, complex incised linear designs, animal hair stopper, wire ring in handleheight 9 cm TEXT The use of snuff and tobacco are used by most indigenous people of southern Africa, it was used for public and private pleasure and as a gift of appreciation to the ancestors. Throughout the various countries snuff containers are small and made from wood, gourds, horn or small found objects, then delicately decorated with engravings, beads or wire work; many have stoppers made form a variety of materials such as the same wood as the body, animal tail hair, found material, or a fabric plug. All were highly personal items and the wooden pieces often achieved splendid patinas through years of use.PROVENANCE Collected in the field in 1989 by Annelle Zaloumis
