A fine example of a coin holder gadget cane. The purse, which has three pockets, is made of leather/brass. It can be firmly held shut by a clip on the side of the brass support ring. This clip is clearly marked “Brevete” (French term for patented). The purse is mounted on a hardwood shaft with horn ferrule. The purse size is ideal for holding up to three former 20 franc gold coins known, colloquially, as “The Napoleon”. First issued in 1803, these were 21 mm in diameter weigh 6.45 grams (gross weight) and 90% pure. The coin continued in use through the 19th century. Could also be an ideal size to carry three gold sovereigns (22mm diameter) first minted in 1817}Purse outer Diameter 1 ½”/39mm. Inner Diameter approx 1”/254mm Cane length 900mm / 35.5” long France, circa 1890
The handle of this stick is of nickel plated brass; the cap of which hinges open to reveal a compass under glass set in a brass ring marked with degrees 0 to 360. A small pin allowed the compass pointer to be locked into place. The compass, in turn, is mounted in a brass circular plate which also supports two hinged pillars. These may be raised and lowered to allow surveyors to sight and set out angles and lines for construction work. ie buildings, roads, etc.The complete handle may be removed for ease of hand sighting. The walnut shaft with the original bass and steel ferrule is in very good condition.Unfortunate hair crack in the glass over the compassOverall length is 35 ½” / 920mm Age-1900?
