SS St Chamond, 1918, North Cornwall A World War I Armed Merchant Ship Gun A 90mm calibre, breach-loading stern gun, iron body with bronze cap, 150cm tall, 230cm in length and 84cm wide. Topedoed and sunk by a German submarine U-60. Helston Gunsmiths reported thus: I think describing the gun as a relic I cannot believe anyone would complain, at worst it could be described as a defectively deactivated weapon, but it has not in the strictest sense been deactivated, nature has rendered it inoperative, with all relevant components put beyond use (barrel, breech block and breech ring). If a buyer wants to export the gun it will require officially deactivating, this could be achieved by drilling and welding in place a few steel pins. The Proof House would need to send down an inspector to inspect and stamp the gun and issue a deactivation certificate, I guess the cost would be £200 to £300, plus an engineer to drill and weld a few pins in place
