Die Arbeit ist in seinem Archiv unter "Nolde A - 239/2022" verzeichnet.ProvenienzDirekt vom Künstler erhalten, Mathias Wiemann, Potsdam/Zürich; seitdem Familienbesitz, durch Erbschaft Privatsammlung KanadaDas Aquarell nimmt einen hohen Stellenwert im Werk Emil Noldes ein, fast lässt sich von einem Markenzeichen sprechen. Im Vergleich zur Ölmalerei ist es ein sehr viel freier und spontaner handhabbares Medium und beinahe überall einsatzfähig. So hält Nolde etwa während seines Aufenthalts in Berlin 1910 zahlreiche Theater- und Konzertszenen fest - mit Aquarellkasten und kleinen Papieren ausgestattet, in den Sitzreihen des dunklen Zuschauerraumes. Wichtiger wird die Wasserfarbenmalerei als schnell umzusetzendes Medium während der medizinisch-demographischen Expedition 1913/1914, zu der der Maler eingeladen wird, um diese der Wissenschaft dienenden Reise visuell festzuhalten. Sie führt ihn u.a. über China und Japan nach Deutsch-Neuguinea. Im chinesischen Meer faszinieren nicht nur die wechselnden atmosphärischen Licht- und Farbspiele, sondern auch die typischen Formen der Schiffe und Dschunken. „Das Aquarell gewährt höchste Freiheit und verweigert jedoch gleichzeitig nahezu jegliche Möglichkeit der Korrektur […]. Rasche Entscheidungen […] sind ebenso wichtig wie Geduld beim Warten. […] Das Aquarell ist das kongeniale Medium, wenn es um den Selbstwert und die Immaterialität der Farbe und den Ausdruck von Subjektivität geht.“ (Nils Ohlsen, Magier des Aquarells, in: Astrid Becker/Christian Ring (Hg.), Emil Nolde. Glühender Farbrausch, Köln 2018, S. 14).Das anlässlich der Südsee-Expedition geweckte Interesse an Meer- und Schifffahrtsmotiven wirkt im nachfolgend entstehenden Werk Noldes fort. Mit dem hier angebotenen Aquarell, welches innerhalb der 1946 in St. Peter gemalten Reihe von Seestücken entstand, wird das sehr deutlich. Scharf umrissen setzt sich das kleine rote Segel des Bootes als einzig fester Farbkörper aus dem in sanftem Rausch ineinanderfließender, exotisch anmutender Farben in einem Spektrum von Blau-Türkis und Violett-Pink-Orange ins räumliche Verhältnis zu dem schwarz vor sich hin wolkenden Dampfer.Das Aquarell erhielt der deutsche Ufa-Schauspieler Mathias Wiemann, den Emil Nolde 1942 in Wien kennengelernt und sich mit ihm befreundet hatte, anlässlich Noldes 80. Geburtstag 1947 (bzgl. des Wienaufenthalts vgl. Emil Nolde, Reisen. Ächtung. Befreiung 1919-1946, Köln 1967, S. 127 ff.). Für Wiemann entstand auch das Gemälde "Zwiegespräch" 1946 (Martin Urban, Emil Nolde, Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, München 1990, Nr. 1277).
