English Language & Linguistics, Senior Lecturer 1994-2009 and advisor to the British Museum and Portable Antiquities Scheme, says: The inscription reads puluis es [Dust thou art] part of Genesis 3.19 in the Vulgate version: puluis es et in pulverem reverteris [Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return (AV)]. Among other places, the text was used in the liturgy for Ash Wednesday, pulvis also meaning 'ash'. (The Black Letter script is not as clear as it might be, the initial 'p' has only a minimal stem, the 'ul' is ligatured, and the following 'u' is inverted so that it looks more like a 'n' – such confusion of 'u' and 'n' is common in the transmission of manuscript texts, and perhaps suggests a semi-literate engraver working from a handwritten text").
