Lot 416

A CLOSELY MATCHED PAIR OF GEORGE IV MAHOGANY CHAMBER TABLESATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1820each 73.8cm high, 68.5cm wide, 46cm deepFor a related Gillows chamber table see Susan E Stuart, Gillows of LANCASTER and LONDON 1730-1840, Antique Collectors' Club, 2008, p300, pl328. 'Small writing or chamber tables were introduced during the early 19th century and several were drawn in the General Sketch Book 1810. A hinged compartment with a pop-up lid was sunk into the writing surface to accommodate an inkwell and other writing equipment. The frieze drawer had to be indented in order to fit round the sides of the ink compartment. Chamber tables with plain turned or reeded legs retained their popularity since a similar design was drawn in the Estimate Sketch Book in 1823'.Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, old splits and chips comensurate with age and useSome fading to colour, staining and ring marks to the tops. Attention to the surfaces by a skilled restorer would improve the appearance considerably. The two tables are very close to each-other in all aspects but some very slight variations in proportion of the turning of the legs (that could be explained by them being hand turned). The figuring of the timber varies slightly between the two. The hinges of the lidded compartments vary between the two (one set has three screw hole son each side, the other has just two. Overall it seems unlikely that they were conceived as a pair but careful polishing in particular could make them appear as a pair prior to very careful inspection. Both tables finished equally on all sides so can free stand and remain presentable. The handles and locks appear original. The keys are present to operate the locks. one lock lacking two screws. The handles of the two tables match eachother. The casters of the two tables all appear original and the designs of them match eachother overall, there may be very slight variation in the scale/ finishing of them. One front leg of one table previously broken (at a relatively clean break) towards the uppermost part of the leg. (see images)To the interior of the lidded element of one table, the original division elements for the pair of inkpots are now lacking. The interior of the lidded element of the other table is lacking its divisions entirely. Both with solid mahogany drawer linings throughout. Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 396

A REGENCY MAHOGANY PARTNER'S PEDESTAL DESK CIRCA 1815 77cm high, 150cm wide, 91cm deepPlease note, the image for this lot has been updated and differs from what is shown in the printed catalogue. Please refer to our website to view all updated images for this lot.Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, some old chips and splits commensurate with age and use. Mainly to the top, there are some additional dark marks, staining scratches and indentation commensurate with age and use. some old ring marks to the top. There are various old stains to the drawer interiors. The drawer linings are solid oak. The floors of some drawer linings have slipped slightly (due to shrinkage etc) so may require very minor adjustment/ gluing to secure back into place. A high number of the locks appear original. One appears to be a Victorian replacement. There is a key present to operate the locks to the top frieze drawers on each side of the desk. There is no key for the lower drawers or the cupboards, but one may be located to operate them if required and this is raised prior to the desk leaving Dreweatts. One of the cupboard doors is locked, the other is open. The upright 'folio' slats/ sections of timber are lacking from the cupboard that is open. The handles appear original. The nuts/ washers securing them may have been replaced. There are no alternate holes for handles. Retains original surface and good colour and patina with some fading. Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition.  Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 58

A LATE VICTORIAN INLAID MAHOGANY QUARTER-CHIMING EIGHT-DAY LONGCASE CLOCKUNSIGNED, CIRCA 1900 INCORPORATING EARLIER ELEMENTSThe triple-train movement with anchor escapement, chiming the quarters on eight bells and sounding the hour on a coiled gong, the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with silvered Roman numeral chapter ring and subsidiary strike/silent selection dial to arch, in a 'pagoda' pedimented case inlaid in the Sheraton manner with an urn within foliate husk borders to the trunk door flanked by brass stop-fluted quarter columns, the panelled base further inlaid with a musical trophy.245cm high including finials, 51cm wide, 24cm deepProvenance: Borde Hill House, West SussexCondition Report: As catalogued the movement is later then the dial and case with the mechanism dating to around 1900. The movement appears complete however is in dirty/neglected condition and the plates appear slightly out of square suggesting that the movement has at some point received a bump to one corner. A competent clockmaker should be able to rectify this issue during the required cleaning/overhaul of the mechanism. The matted dial centre (disc within the chapter ring) has been replaced to allow the winding holes to correlate with the present movement; the recessed subsidiary seconds dial has most likely been transposed over from the original late 18th century dial centre. The dial otherwise is in sound original albeit dirty/discoloured condition. The case is generally in good condition. All of the inlay is circa 1900 whilst the background veneers and structure are late 18th century. The plinth top moulding has a bruise neat the centre most likely from one of the weights being bashed against it during removal or installation otherwise faults to the case are very much limited to minor bumps, scuffs, shrinkage, wear and other age related blemishes.Clock has pendulum, three weights but no case key or winder. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. However, all lots are of an age and type which means that they may not be in perfect condition and should be viewed by prospective bidders; please refer to Condition 6 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers. Lot 59

A LATE VICTORIAN GILT BRONZE MOUNTED EBONISED QUARTER-CHIMING BRACKET CLOCK OF SMALL SIZEUNSIGNED, CIRCA 1900The eight-day triple fusee movement with platform lever escapement and chiming the quarters on either six bells or four gongs, with foliate engraved backplate and 5 inch arched brass dial applied with silvered Arabic numeral chapter ring beneath subsidiary strike/chime selection dials to the arch, the case with gilt cupola and baluster galleries to superstructure, Corinthian columns flanking the dial and fine foliate cast arched frets to sides, on chiselled scroll feet.40cm high, 27cm wide, 21.5cm deepProvenance: Borde Hill House, West SussexCondition Report: Movement is complete and in reasonably clean condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The going train is working (although accuracy of timekeeping has not been checked) the quarter train sounds on a graduated nest of eight (not six as catalogued) bells of four gongs - the train will operate but is very slow/lazy indicating that lubrication has 'dried-out'/'gummed-up' hence a gentle clean/service will be required. The strike train is currently not operating most likely due to also being dried-out/gummed-up. The dial has overall oxidation/mellowing to the silvering and very slight discolouration to the gilt finishes otherwise is in fine original condition. The 'Eight Bells/Westminster' selection dial is operational however the clock will still want to chime when the chime/silent dial is selected to 'SILENT'.The case is generally in fine original unrestored condition with faults very much limited to overall light to moderate discolouration and wear to the gilt mounts and a light bumps, scuffs, age related wear to the ebonised finishes; the rear door frame has some shrinkage cracking/movement to the veneers.Clock is complete with winder and case key. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. However, all lots are of an age and type which means that they may not be in perfect condition and should be viewed by prospective bidders; please refer to Condition 6 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers.
