A Crimea Group of Three to General Sir Francis William Thomas, K.C.B., R.M.L.I., who saw considerable action during his time in the Crimea Campaign and was present at Odessa, Balaklava, Eupatoria and Kinburn Crimea 1854-56, one clasp, Sebastopol (1st Lieut F.W. Thomas. R.M.), contemporarily engraved in large sloping serif capitals; Turkey, Order of the Medjidieh, Fifth Class breast Badge, silver, gold and enamel, damage to enamel, rosette on riband; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian die, pierced for suspension as issued, with ring, first with contact marks, good fine or better (3) K.C.B. London Gazette 19.6.1911 General Francis William Thomas, R.M.L.I. General Sir Francis William Thomas, K.C.B. (1832-1925), son of Captain J.W. Thomas, R.M; Entered the Royal Marines 1849 as 2nd Lieutenant; 1st Lieutenant, 1853; served in H.M.S. Bellerophon (1853-54); served with the Black Sea Fleet and was present at the Bombardment of Odessa; Landed at Eupatoria and at Balaklava; Present with the Expeditionary Force at the capture of Kinburn; Sir Francis was favourably recommended by Lord George Paulet to take the position of Adjutant to the detachment, 1857; Captain, 1862; Between 1862-66 saw Sir Francis in command of a detachment employed on the public works on Ireland Island, Bermuda; Major, 1877. Lieutenant-Colonel, 1878; Major-General, 1886; advanced General, 1889; retired 1897.
A Reeded Ebony Colonial Sewing Box. The fitted interior incorporating a partitioned tray of lidded compartments inlaid with boxwood & ebony chevron bands and a ring of foliage & berries to the centre and having small hoop handles on carved bone flower-head mounts. The tray lifting out to access further enclosed compartments below. 4½ ins x 16 ins x 10¾ ins (11.5 cms x 40.5 cms x 27.5 cms).
A Large 18th Century Giltwood & Painted Wall Clock. The box- frame case having a crested top rail; the oval centre carved with a profile portrait of a soldier flanked by chinoiserie style figures and surmounted by gilded ball knop finials. The wooden clock face with a painted chapter ring bordering a depiction of Orithyia being carried off by Boreas; the North Wind. The pendulum aperture surrounded by a sea-scape with ship in the distance and a man reclined against a tree. Framed by an [unglazed] door with a painted border highlighted with gilding above a shaped apron. 39 ins x 28 ins x 6½ ins (100 cms x 71 cms x 16.5 cms).
Three Small Antique Dome-topped Caskets: One clad in perished leather with brass studded borders, a brass swing handle to the lid and an iron lock-plate to the front, opening to reveal a news print lined interior, 4½ ins 6 ins x 8 ins (11.5 cms x 15 cms x 20 cms). One covered in sponged simulated tortoiseshell paper with a ring handle to the lid, 3¼ ins x 4¼ ins x 7½ ins (8 cms x 11 cms x 19 cms). The last clad in tooled leather with a brass swing handle to the lid and a partitioned interior lined in block printed newspaper, 2¾ ins x 4 ¼ ins x 8 ins (7 cms x 11 cms x 20 cms).
An 18th Century Copper Wine Cooler. The flared rim having a rope twist edge above a nulled frieze with lion head ring handles. The bulbous body embossed with a gadrooned band and raised on ball feet. 8 ins (20 cms) in height, 18 ins (46 cms) wide, 12 ins (30 cms).
A Charming 19th Century Miniature Turners Chair. The chip-carved and incised back rail joined by a central turned column and two shaped supports. The long slanted bobbin turned arms adjoining ring turned legs united by peripheral stretchers and the front having two vertical spindles. 11½ ins (29 cms) in height 8½ ins ( 21.5 cms) wide, 7 ins (18 cms) deep.
A Late 17th Century Oak Dresser Base of good colour & patination. The two plank top with moulded edge above an applied strip of geometric beading and three short geometric moulded drawers with brass ring handles on quatrefoil back plates. The shaped & pierced corner brackets incised with a decorative border above compressed ball & fillet legs and terminating with block feet. 32½ ins (82 cms) in height, 66 ins (168 cms) in width, 17½ ins (45 cms) in depth.
A 17th/18th Century Oak Turners Chair. The ribbed top rail supported by four long ring, ball & baluster turned arm rails raised on ringed front columns. The back column enriched with punchwork & issuing six slanted paired baluster turned spindles. The triangular seat bordered by parallel sided baluster & ring turned rails and having corresponding stretchers.
