Sailors would refer to an ammunition store as a "magazine", soldiers referred to one as an "ammunition dump/store". Magazines were very problematic during naval engagements in the Great war. A number of British capital ships were lost when direct hits were scored on their magazines. Many Royal Navy ships contributed men and heavy guns for land use in South Africa. This shell case is possibly from a projectile fired by a 4.7 inch naval gun mounted for field service on land. There were some with the Ladysmith Relief Force.

Featured in 'Welsh Furniture 1250 - 1950 by Richard Bebb (Volume II, page 97)Condition Report: Old marks, scratches and abrasions, chips and splits comensurate with age and useSome old repairs, including fillets of timber as old honest repairs often expected for this age and type of furniture. some small old losses. some old worm damage as expected for age and type. Some small nails of various date used to secure some elements. (see images)Good colour and patina overall but with fading to the front in particular. . Original surface overall. Some additional old dark scratches and indentation as expected for age and use. Some partial dark old ring marks to the 'shelf' of the lower part. The brass handles have age and suit the piece well but are later replacements. There are disguised/ plugged holes from a previous/ original set of handles (see images) many are disguised by very well matched square shaped sections of matching timber. There are circular marks surrounding them caused by the previous/ original sets of handles. The brass escutcheons are equally very likely later additions or replacements. One of the upper door escutcheons is false and there is no lock, the other lock looks to be an addition but has age. The lock to the longer drawer of the lower section appears original or atleast to be of the period. Lacking keys. To the lower cupboard, it appears that there was previously a shelf there that is now lacking (see images) Rather charmingly, one rear panel visible from inside the cupbaord is a re-use of a 17th century panel as it is carved with initial and partial date '168' (see additional images) The rear panels all appear original throughout, as do the drawer linings and timbers forming the lings of the cupboards. No obvious splicing to feet. Some planks forming 'floor' of drawers vary from each other but appear to be of period, some may be honest old replacements. There is some division between elements forming the floors of the drawers (as expected)Of solid structure overall. The rear panels all appear original. Y A ROSEWOOD AND BRASS INLAID LIBRARY BOOKCASECIRCA 1820 AND LATER In the manner of George Bullock, the upper and lower bookcase sections separated by a marble surface193cm high, 246cm wide, 42cm deepProvenance: From the Private Collection of a titled family Please note, this bookcase was constructed in the 20th century, possibly using some 19th century elements.  Condition Report: Old marks, scratches and abrasions, chips and splits comensurate with age and use. Some losses. Some old repairs. Some fading in areas. Some indentation to the brass marquetry. Some elements of brass lifting partially in a small number of positions and shoudl be relatively easily laid back down. There are a number of detached elements of moulding, most appear to be present, a small number are lacking and will require replacement. This should be a relatively simple task by a restorer. The bookcase is extremely well made with the use of high quality material. Overall this bookcase was likely constructed in the 20th century. The carcass is basically solid mahogany in the main (where visible) This makes the bookcase presentable even when shelves are empty or objects are placed. Some staining, ring marks, larger dark coloured scratches to the shelves. All of the shelves are adjustable. The apertures run down the sides of the interior side panels of each section (see images) There is one old repaired crack to the marble elements (at the front of the top of the lower section) with dark filler used to disguise small fragmentary losses (see images) Some additional scratching to the marble section, The appearance of this could be improved with correct treatment by a restorer. The marble element is secured with screws. When the moulded elements at the base of the lower section are in position, the securing screws are hidden.
