10 Cents. 1910. ICCS graded Gem Uncirculated-65. Blazing frosty white surfaces and lustre, with a perimeter ring of orange and violet toning that hardly extends past the denticles. Boldly struck, with outstanding venation in the wreath. Top 10 census, with only 1 coin graded finer by ICCS in MS-66.
10 Cents. 1935. ICCS graded Gem Uncirculated-65. The very lowest mintage of all George V ten cents, with only 384,056 pieces having been produced The strike on this piece is bold and sharp. Only a few grazes hold this coin back from a higher grade, which no example has attained from ICCS. Tones of pale gold ring the perimeter, with a patch of burnt orange and indigo above the obverse and reverse crowns. Superior eye appeal.
Saxon Silver Twisted-Bezel Ring 6th-9th century AD. A round-section hoop of two wires with twisted spiral bezel and seven coils to the shoulders. 1.35 grams, 18mm overall, 15.89mm internal diameter (approximate size British K, USA 5 1/4, Europe 9.95, Japan 9) (3/4"). From a European collection, acquired in the 1970s. Extremely fine condition.
Anglo-Saxon Silver Ring with Expanding Bezel 6th-7th century AD. A round-section hoop with ends coiled over the shank. 1.40 grams, 23mm overall, 20.21mm internal diameter (approximate size British U 1/2, USA 10 1/2, Europe 23.59, Japan 22) (1"). From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000. Cf. MacGregor, A. & Bolick, E. Frankish Silver-Gilt and Garnet Horse Harness Mount 6th century AD. A discoid mount with four stub legs to the reverse; the surface with reserved border, parcel-gilt quadrants, each with a reserved ring-and-dot motif, garnet cloisons to the centre and four arms; the border with radiating punchmarks of a triangle with a pellet in each angle; to the reverse, a scratched letter 'A'. 9.18 grams, 29mm (1 1/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. Cf. brooches of similar design in Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, items VI.3.13.1, VI.3.13.2. Very fine condition.
Anglo-Saxon Bronze Cruciform Brooch with Horse-Head Finial 6th century AD. A substantial cruciform bow brooch of Group IVaiii comprising: rectangular headplate with two trapezoidal wings, crescent punchmarks to the edges, two D-section collared knops to the wings and a third to the upper edge with looped crown; deep bow with chamfered ends; trapezoidal footplate with lappets, each with a ring-and-dot motif; transverse ribbed collar above a horse-head finial with conical eyes, spiral nostrils and pelta-shaped plaque; catchplate to the reverse and ferrous accretion from the pin. 86 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). Anglo-Saxon Gilt-Bronze Wolf's Head Strap End 8th-9th century AD. A cast strap fitting comprising a trapezoidal plaque with rectangular slot at the broad end; the outer face with a stylised wolf's head modelled in the half-round, the jaws open with a rounded lug in the mouth, pierced to accept a suspension ring; circular socket to the reverse. 8.74 grams, 28mm (1"). Property of a Middlesex gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. Cf. beast-head fittings on the helmet from Coppergate, York, published in Webster, L. & Backhouse, J. The Making of England.
