A Shan States bronze rain drum, the concentric ring decorated top mounted with stylised frogs, sides with loop handles and raised ring decoration, 66cm diameter, 57cm high This type of drum which ultimately derives from the much earlier Dong Son type (see lot 324) was traditionally made in the Shan states for the Karen people. The drum would be beaten during a ritual to encourage rainfall to enable the harvest. The Karen are a major ethnic group in Burma with origins in Yunnan province in China. See Richard M. An unusual early Victorian drop dial wall clock, by Pace 126. Ct. Portland Street wall clock, twin fusee striking on a bell with visible pendulum bob and key, 53cm high. Condition - fair, untested Pendulum suspension damaged so cannot be attached and set going but the suspension link is retained; case with two light cracks to veneers at 3 and 9. Silvered brass dial diameter 25.5cm, within cast brass bezel. Bezel secured by a sliding catch. Back of movement frontplate with two redundant holes at area behind rotating date-ring; no redundant holes in backplate but there are a few circular filled holes to the backplate that do not line-up with a purpose. Three redundant holes in back of brass dial, see eighth image. Pendulum adjusting nut is above the pendulum bob. Pendulum does seem to be original. Not seen any damage to pinions/collets. Four-wheel strike train has been activated and evidenced. Calendar wheel complete. Mock pendulum correctly attached to escape wheel. Strange to have mock pendulum to dial when pendulum bob is visible in the drop-dial section of the case. Bar securing the crutch is marginally above the top of the backplate. Left screw securing crutch is smaller than the right screw. Fusee barrel pinions are not obviously different. Provenance private local.
