Natal 1865 (4 Mar.) envelope from Durban to Leeds, bearing 1863-65 6d. lilac pair each cancelled with double-ring datestamp and showing, below, rare "10d" Postage Paid Accountancy handstamp in red (Hart T.4.2.) alongside London Paid transit c.d.s. Nigeria 1916 (13 Nov.) envelope (with original letter) from the ship`s surgeon A.R. Steel on board S.S. Mendi to his solicitor in Hartlepool, bearing 1914 1d. tied by "lagos/southern nigeria" double-ring d.s.; the envelope with four pinholes at upper left. Also 1912 (8 Feb.) picture postcard (Dropping Anchor, S/S "Mendi") from Lagos to England Note: The letter tells of the penultimate voyage of the ship when it was requisitioned by H.M. Government to take 1000 Nigerian troops to the campaign in East Africa. It was sunk on the next voyage when it was taking the South African Native labour contingent to Europe. 650 men lost their lives including A.R. Steel. Northern Nigeria 1912 (28 July) envelope to France sent from Zinder/Niger via Kano from Corporal Fouque in charge of boot repairs, bearing Northern Nigeria 1910 ½d. and 1d. vertical pair, both tied by "kano northern nigeria" double-ring d.s. and showing Toulon arrival d.s. on reverse. Rare. Photo Note: At this time Niger was under French Military Administration with a very primitive communications system. This letter would have been carried by a camel train/runner to Kano. Northern Rhodesia The Mkushi Provisional Postage Due Stamps In July 1953, postal rates within the South African Postal Union were increased. Many post offices in Northern Rhodesia experienced shortages of Postage Due stamps. Owing to a misunderstanding, quantities of 1d. definitive stamps and of the 1953 Rhodes Birth Centenary stamps were overprinted and surcharged. Although unofficially prepared, their usage was subsequently approved by the Postal Authorities 1953 (16 July) envelope from Kasama to Mkushi, bearing Coronation 1½d. with superb double-ring datestamp, showing manuscript "1d" and bearing, at upper left, Definitive 1d. with type-written "postage/due/1d" (Type 5) in red cancelled by Mkushi c.d.s. for 23 August. Very rare and the earliest of only four such covers recorded in "The Rhodesian Philatelist" listing, of which this in number 6. S.G. cat. from £4,250. France Dahomey/Benin 1890 (10 Sept.) envelope, with original letter, from Ensign Degrenand to his Uncle in the Ivory Coast, bearing France 15c. Sage tied by "corr des armees/l.l. no 1" double-ring d.s. in blue-black, showing another clearer strike on face with, on reverse, Brazey en Plaine arrival c.d.s.. F size envelope from Francistown to Cape Town, bearing 1888 3d. lilac and black neatly cancelled with double-ring datestamp with a further strike alongside and also cancelling the stamp impression on flap, arrival oval datestamp (15.4) on reverse; a late usage of this stamp in the Protectorate. G size registered envelope (Thy RE 39) from Palapye Rail to Johannesburg, uprated with 1913-24 ½d. sharing double-ring datestamp with imprinted stamp, handstamp registration handstamp in violet at left, private arrival datestamp (21.9) on reverse; crease on flap, otherwise fine and one of the rarest Protectorate registration envelopes. G size registered envelope (Thy Re 40) from Ramaquabane to Vienna, uprated with 1925-27 ½d. and 1d. pair all cancelled with double-ring datestamps, manuscript town name in registration box at upper left with this office never issued with registration labels, no transit markings; a fine and rare cover from this village situated in the north east of Bechuanaland, and which was a postal agency under Francistown. Cameroons French Campaign 1914 - 1918 Military Mail 1915 (31 Jan.) unstamped "correspondance/des armées/de la republique" special military postcard, sent from the quarantine/fever centre in Dakar to Duala and directed to be repatriated to Dakar, showing circular "tresor et poste/aux/armées" handstamp in violet and, on reverse, "brazzaville/congo-francais" double-ring transit d.s. Gambia 1904-06 Issue Specimen Stamps 7½d. horizontal pair, 10d. vertical pair, 1/6d., 2/6d. horizontal pair and 3/-, each handstamped "specimen" (12x1½mm.) and with identifiable part strikes of the "colonie du gabon et du congo francais/direction de l`interieur/1er/bureau" double-ring Receiving Authority handstamp, all without gum and the pairs rejoined; odd imperfections though a remarkable group from the Gabon U.P.U. archive which was dispersed in c. 1975, and of which only a handful of each exist. Photo Note: Marcus Samuel refers to these Specimen handstamps on page 58 of his handbook and suggests that shortly after joining the U.P.U. in 1904 exchanged stamps with fellow members.
