Amethyst and citrine are both members of the quartz family. Amethyst occurs with hues from a light lavender to a deep purple. It has been highly revered throughout history by many cultures. The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle because of it's supposed healing properties. Amethyst beads have been found in Anglo-Saxon graves in England and Anglican bishops wear an episcopal ring often set with an amethyst. Tibetans consider amethyst sacred to the Buddha and make prayer beads from it. It was considered a symbol of royalty during the Middle Ages and used to decorate English regalia. As one of the Old World 'Cardinal Gems', it was one of the five gemstones considered precious above all others. Amethyst is the birthstone of February. A late 19th century German walnut and gilt-brass mounted Mantel Clock and 'Symphonica Harmonie' Musical Box, no. 38756, probably by Junghans but unsigned, the brass dial with silver chapter ring and Arabic numerals, to the two train brass framed movement, the hinged lid containing 14.5cm diameter steel disc and movement with 5.5cm steel combs, contained in rectangular case with reeded raised top, gilt brass spiral reeded columns to corners and bun feet, 53cm high x 30cm wide x 22.5cm deep, together with seven steel discs, pendulum and key.
A silver mounted claret jug, hallmarked Birmingham 1919, with a pouring spout, hinged lid and scroll handle, set on a cut glass bowl, 25cm highCondition reportThe claret jug is in excellent overall condition. I suspect the glass bowl was originally a fine mallet from decanter and has been converted at a later date as a useful jug. This is not easily confirmed as no trace of any break in the original glass top is visible beneath the silver collar ring. It will make an excellent table piece.
