A very fine and scarce die-stamped pair by PF (Philip Firmin) bearing London hallmarks to obverse of each. Plate being a crowned laurel wreath with central large White Rose of York mounted on backing plate. Four screw posts to reverse ... boss being a disc with raised floral rim and pierced “West York Rifles”; centre mounted with lion’s mask in relief and fitted with small loose ring for attachment to a chain. Victorian Rifles Officer’s astrakhan rifle cap. A good example of black lambs wool by Hawkes & Co. of Piccadilly. To the front a swag of plaited mohair cord, which rises to either side and secured by a small blacked strung bugle device. To the front, a blackened curled bugle device, above a black cord boss bearing a Victorian Crown, the boss supporting a vulture and ostrich feather plume, with blacked silver ring. The crown of the cap is of dark green melton cloth ornamented with mohair cord. The interior with leather sweatband and silk lining. Complete with black patent leather chin strap. GC clean condition.
