Pkt", redirected to Dublin Castle, with double and single ring crowned Free datestamps applied upon receipt and redirection (July 19) and crowned shield type Free datestamp applied in Dublin (July 21), backstamped at Kingston, Jamaica. A scarce free from abroad to the Under-Secretary of the War Office (who had unlimited franking privileges) with three differing type free datestamps from both London and Dublin, exceptional quality. 1788-91 Entire letter and entire, the 1788 letter from James Esdaile & Co to Cobb & Co in Margate franked by B. Hammet (a clear abuse of the franking privilege), both with circular double ring "FREE / C" used by Inspector of Franks Charles Coltson, superb strikes in black or red, uncommon so fine. (2). Photo on Page 26.
1892-94 ½d - 1/- Used, at least three examples of each value with several pieces, many collected for their cancellations including "466" of Liverpool, circular undated two ring parcel type (17, with rare "QUO IBOE" and "NEW CALABAR"), violet oval Sombreiro River, 1/- on piece with Buguma c.d.s, red datestamps, also a few mint. 1792 (Dec 3) Entire letter written and signed by Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society (who accompanied Capt. Cook on his round the world expedition in the "Endeavour"), addressed to the Earl of Fife at Duff House in Scotland, readdressed to Fife House in London. Handstamped with red triple ring Free datestamps with "P" at base (Dec. 3, used by John Palmer) or "C" at base (Dec 17, used by Charles Coltson), straight line "BANFF", backstamped at London and Edinburgh (Dec. 5 and twice on Dec. 14). A very unusual combination of Free datestamps with differing inspector initials, and a good autograph. Photo on Page 28.
1797 Entires with triple or quadruple ring (Evening Duty) Free datestamps with a diamond at base, one wrapper addressed and signed by the Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger with both Morning and Evening Duty Free datestamps, the others with the earliest recorded dates for both datestamps, all fine. (3).
1915-16 Philatelic registered covers from Lome bearing Gold Coast stamps with Accra type 7 overprints, comprising four covers to England with various values to the 1/-, and an unoverprinted Gold Coast 2d registration envelope used within Lome bearing ½d - 1/- overprints tied by Lome double ring skeleton datestamps, also an unusual cover bearing unoverprinted Gold Coast ½d - 1/-. (6).
Mobile Box - Channel Islands. 1909-27 Picture Postcards to Jersey with French stamps cancelled boxed "JERSEY / FRANCE / M.B" datestamps (2, also cancels on two pieces); and 1923 picture postcard from St. Malo to Guernsey with France 30c unusually cancelled by "GUERNSEY" single ring c.d.s. (5).
1841-1934 Mint and used selection on pages including 1841 1d reds with unused singles (2, one possibly an Imprimatur) and block of four on deeply blued paper (all without gum, the block creased) and used from plates 9 (2), 10, or with inverted watermark, 1864-79 1d plate 215 mint block of nine, 1881 5d indigo mint, 1912 ½d Royal Cypher imperf mint, 1912-24 4d, 9d agate and 1924-26 3d, 4d inverted watermarks mint, 1913 Multiple Royal Cypher ½d, 1d mint, 1913 £1 green used with single ring c.d.s (small defect at right), a few Specimens, etc. A few faults but some very useful stamps noted. (102).
Receiving Houses. 1861-c.1880 Covers with Receiving House datestamps including single ring cancels "PESHAWAR CITY RECG HOUSE" (2, one registered) or "KURRANCHE R. RECG HOUSE", double ring "BOREE BUNDER / R.H" (2), "KURRACHEE RECG HOUSE" number "2" duplex on a registered cover, "MADRAS / R.H No. 3" datestamp on 1861 cover bearing ½a pair cancelled by rhomboid of dots, etc., a few faults. (10).
Railways/T.P.Os. c.1860-1912 Covers and cards (25), stamps and pieces (7), mainly QV ½a native covers, cancellations include scarce boxed "MAIL GUARD / No. 2", "3 SECT 2 / UP / N. TRAIN" and "B.B & C.I. RY / MAIL GUARD" single ring datestamps, registered covers with boxed "M.A R.S DELHI" or "M.A PESHAWAR", etc., some faults. (32).
1940-42 Covers and cards (26) including "E.A ARMY POSTAL SERVICE / No. 1" c.d.s (3) and similar No. 2 c.d.s, double ring "APS EAF" (3) or dumb datestamps, violet "E.A.A.P.S /NAIROBI / 5" c.d.s, various Postal Frank or military cachets, forces mail posted into civil offices, green Field Service postcards (3, Burrows type 2.30, two unused), etc. Also ephemera with 1941 (Oct 4) "Special Order of the Day" issued in Sudan after the surrender of Italian forces in East Africa, Italian propaganda leaflet in arabic used in Sudan, 1941 (July 1) East African Currency Board 5/- banknote, etc. (31).
RICHARD RIEMERSCHMID (1868 -1957), an oak Arts and Crafts or Jugendstil sideboard, ca 1905. Made by the Dresdner Werkstatten fur Handwerkskunst and exhibited in the German Decorative Arts Exhibition, Dresden, 1906, later variants of this sideboard are held in the collections of the museums of Dresden and Cologne, height 113cm, Width 105cm, depth 53cmIn good original condition, some ring marks to top, down bar on lock has been removed but is present.
