A 10-BORE FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN BY MANTON, 44.25inch sighted browned multi-stage damascus barrel ring turned at the midpoint and finely inlaid and decorated with gold with stands of arms and swags, and banding at the muzzle, further inlaid in gold Manton London in scrolling Gothic script, gold lined breech, pan and touch hole, border engraved stepped lock signed MANTON and fitted with a roller frizzen, half stocked with horn fore-end cap and chequered wrist, steel mounts, the trigger guard engraved with a stand of arms and the serial no. 1653 for 1792, brass capped wooden ramrod. It is of note that serial no. 1658 is listed in The Mantons: Gunmaker's by W.Keith Neal and D.H.L. Back as being an unmounted Single 10-Bore Barrel of 45inches, of further note is the reference to "the words on the barrel and the touch-hole are in gold, and the barrel is decorated in gold at both breech and muzzle".

The Steamship Pleiad served on the West Africa Niger expedition. Works on FC and HC, rusted and pitted bore and the butt with various stickers.
