Late Medieval, an impressive and exquisitely engraved gold iconographic finger ring dating to the later 15th or early 16th century. The ring demonstrates a circular 'D' sectioned hoop adorned with cabled and beaded twist decoration on its outer face. On each side of the hoop, the uppermost 'cable' transitions into a solid raised ridge that extends along the shoulders of the ring and onto the rectangular bezel, creating an obliquely-angled facetted surface with two distinct rectangular panels. A series of four floral sprays depicting cinquefoils have been engraved on each shoulder, while on each bezel panel is engraved the depiction of a saint. On the right hand panel the figure of St Catherine can be discerned, a wheel to the left of her head. By contrast, the left hand panel appears to depict St George trampling the dragon, nimbate and holding a long cross in his right hand. Preserved exceptionally, though a small section of the left-hand shoulder has broken away irregularly. External diameter of hoop: c. 20mm. Width of bezel: 7mm. Weight: 4.62g. Discussion: iconographic rings were popular during the later 15th and earlier 16th centuries, religious items that presumably were intended to invoke the power of the depicted saints in an amuletic sense. Manufactured in both base and precious metals (gold examples being very rare indeed) they appear to have been produced and owned by a relatively wide strata of society. The high quality of this example infers a wealthy and certainly locally-important owner. Provenance: found Beverley Area, East Yorkshire, 2016. Recorded on the PAS as YORYM-FCA9E5. Treasure reference 2016 T1030.
