JEAN VARDA (TURKISH/AMERICAN, 1893-1971)Spanish dancers in an abstract landscape signed 'J. Varda' (lower right) and inscribed 'No. 16' (to backboard) mixed media collage on board 53 x 73cm together with a ring-bound file with information on the artist compiled by the vendor ARR Provenance Private collection, UKFootnoteJean 'Yanko' Varda was a Turkish born American artist of mixed Greek and French descent. At the age of 19 he moved to Paris where he met Picasso and Braque, before moving to London during the First world War, becoming a ballet dancer, and then returning to Paris by 1922. He subsequently spent many summers in Cassis in the South of France, sharing Roland Penrose's home Villa Les Mimosas, where they hosted many creative guests including Braque, Miro, Derain, Max Ernst, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant and others. He spent most of his winters in this period in London.During the 1930s Varda developed a type of mosaic using pieces of broken mirrors, which he would scratch and then paint in bright colours. He exhibited work in London and Paris and, once he had moved to The United States in 1939, in New York, at the Neumann-Willard Gallery. He later moved from New York to Big Sur and Monterey, his home in the latter becoming a haven for artists and writers during the Second World War. In the 1940s Varda developed his style, moving from mosaics to collage, usually combining scraps of cloth and paper with paint on board. In the late 1940s Varda and the British artist Gordon Onslow Ford acquired an old ferry boat, the Vallejo, permanently mooring it in Sausalito, across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, and adapting it for their artist's studios and also providing living quarters. Varda continued to create art, mostly collages, throughout his life before he died in 1971 from a heart attack in Mexico City.

DAVISON'S MEDAL FOR THE BATTLE OF THE NILE IN BRONZE, 1798. Hope standing on a rocky promontory l. holding an oval medallion of Nelson 'Europe's Hope and Britain's Glory', with an open sea beyond 'Rear-Admiral Lord Nelson of the Nile'. Reverse with the British Fleet assembled in Aboukir Bay preparing to engage the French. The exurge 'Victory of the Nile August 1. 1798'. The rim 'From Alexr. Davison Esqr. St James's Square - A tribute of Regard'. By C.H. Kuchler, Soho mint. This medal was produced by Nelson's Prize Agent Alexander Davison for all those who served in HM ships at the Battle of the Nile. Being in bronze this example will have been awarded to a Rating. (Eimer 890).In a velvet and ebonised mount with a verse to the reverse 'Tis of Davidson's medal'. The mount 10 cm wide. Tis of Davison's medal in bronze that I speak A Whitehall concession to its donor unique. The Davison medal all gained at the Nile So cleverly Laura obtained, In sky-blue velvet setting shows its beauty and style. Quite unrestrained; Finished by Horatio and in ebon ring framed, Who needless to tell is appropriately named, Neatly and well, Where it shines 'neath Abbott's picture Of this famous battle's victor 'Our Nel'.The interesting verse on the reverse of this raises some interesting possibilities. The Abbott refereed to will be Lemuel Francis Abbott (1760/61-1803) who produced a number of portraits of Nelson, indeed his are the most highly regarded and most frequently reproduced images on Nelson. Portraits by Abbott are included in many important international collections not least the National Portrait Gallery, National Maritime Museum and Buckingham Palace. One of the examples at Greenwich was originally given by Nelson to Alexander Davison, the verse suggests this medal was hung below a portrait and it is tempting to speculate which portrait this refers to and in whose collection it might have originally belonged. *CR Very nice condition, velvet mount faded.
