He had enthusiastically introduced the study of Greek in his hometown, preparing Greek grammars and texts for the use of teachers, students, and adults interested in learning the language. He was also a fine musician, publishing his Institutiones Musicae in the same year as this edition of Lucian, and later becoming organist of St. Thomas's in Strasbourg.

It includes much on the participants, the staging and the libretti. Ferrara was known as something of a centre for this type of entertainment, which used spectacular scenery, elaborate machinery and 'special effects', and incorporated singing and dancing in performances.
