Lot 74

Registration No: K259 DAR Chassis No: WF0AXXGBBANY69178 MOT: May 2025Odometer displays just c.41,000 milesOffered with history file, MOT certificates and current V5CRecently refurbished alloy wheels shod with new tyresOne of only 30 Sierra Azura left registered on the road in the UKThe Ford Sierra was manufactured and marketed by Ford of Europe from 1982–1993 and followed the unveiling of its controversial shape at the 1982 British International Motor Show in Birmingham, shortly followed by the 1982 Paris Salon de l'Automobile. Sales began on 15th October 1982, replacing the Cortina MkV. Its striking aerodynamic styling, first seen on the Probe III concept car in 1981, was such that many conservative buyers (including company car drivers) shunned its design over rivals such as the Vauxhall Cavalier. A saloon model debuted in 1987 with the introduction of the facelifted Sierra, the saloon was marketed as the Sierra Sapphire on the UK market. The front end was completely revised, with the biggest difference being the indicators now positioned above the bumper and to the side of a new headlight design. While the grille again remained blanked off, the UK, Irish, and South African versions of the newly introduced saloon version featured a unique shallow black grille between the headlights. The rear lights were replaced with slimmer but wider models containing separate stop lamps.Supplied new by W. H. Perry (Ford) Limited, Rayleigh, on the 3rd December 1992 to first owner Mrs E. Ingram and in current ownership since 2020, this limited edition example of the Sierra, with its 1.8 engine and 5-speed transmission, displays a credible c.40,791 miles. Evidently looked-after in previous long-term ownership 2009-2019, its time-warp condition has even seen the Sierra used to represent 1990s scenography in the Channel 5 (UK) TV documentary 'The Girl in the Box'. In current ownership, spring 2020 saw differential and transmission oil topped-up, fluids changed, new tailgate struts, an immobiliser fitted and Waxoyl applied. Autumn 2020 saw the fitment of a battery switch and new front indicator light lenses. Improvements continued to be made into the spring of 2021, with the driver’s door handle replaced, a Tracker fitted, rear door rubber strips replaced, the rear driver’s side handle replaced, the fuel filter mount secured, a new wheel cylinder fitted, the cambelt replaced by Reliance Garage, Glossop and a new battery. Spring 2022 saw a NOS Ford exchange radiator fitted along with poly-bushes for the front suspension and autumn of 2022 saw the wheels powder coated and shod with new tyres and the original radio refitted. The Sierra benefitted from an oil change in May 2023 along with new number plates, as the originals wouldn’t pass the MOT. Offered with an MOT (into May 2025) and the current V5C. Initial models were produced in a two-door sedan body style with four-cylinder petrol engines. Fuel-injected engines were introduced in late 1975 and 6-cylinder engines were added in 1977. A cabriolet body style - manufactured by Baur- was produced from 1978 to 1981. There was no BMW M3 model for the E21 generation, however, several limited-edition models were produced based on the highest model, the six-cylinder 323i. The E21 was replaced by the E30 3 Series in 1982.Offered from long-term ownership, this 316 displays a credible c.41,000 miles. Presenting in BMW’s iconic colour of Henna Red, this is also a desirable manual gearbox example that is said to be highly original. With the distinctive number of ‘EEE 61Y’, it has just two former keepers recorded on the V5C and comes from 8 years of ownership, benefitting from refurbished period-style 13” BBS alloy in that time. The interior is very original and still has a 1980s radio cassette fitted and the boot lid’s set of tools. It comes to the sale with a large history file that includes a collection of old invoices & MOTs that go some way to evidence the mileage. Frankenstein Playbills. Presumption! Or, The Fate of Frankenstein. Thirteenth Time, Theatre Royal, English Opera House, Strand, This Evening, Tuesday, August 12th, 1823, printed letterpress playbill, advertising as the headline production the thirteenth performance of the first play to dramatize Mary Shelley's novel, with an seven-line quotation from the preface to the novel, featuring Mr Wallack as Frankenstein, Mr Rowbotham as De Lacey, Mr T. P. Cooke (as the monster), Mr Pearman, Mrs. Austin, Miss L. Dance, et al., also advertising performances of Is He Jealous? and “I Will Have a Wife!”, together with another similar Theatre Royal playbill for Monday, 18 August 1823, listing the eighteenth performance of Presumption! Or, The Fate of Frankenstein as the third act of the evening, the first two starring [Charles] Mathews in The Polly Packet and Monsieur Tonson, both playbills printed in black on off-white thin wove paper, versos blank, 340 x 200 mmQTY: (2)NOTE:Presumption, a two-act play by Richard Brinsley Peake, was the first dramatisation based on Mary Shelley's anonymous novel to be performed on stage. It opened on 28 July 1823 at the English Opera House [Lyceum Theatre, where Bram Stoker was later to work] on the Strand, London. Peake took some liberties in his adaptation, adding several new characters including the first of Victor Frankenstein's various assistants. Notably, he also turned Mary Shelley's well-cultured monster into a mute and rather idiotic creature. On the playbill his character's name is simply represented by a series of dashes. For this first season James Wallack took the part of Doctor Frankenstein and Thomas Potter Cooke the part of the monster.Mary Shelley had mixed feelings about the play when it opened but, echoing Lord Byron, wrote: 'But lo and behold I found myself famous! Frankenstein had prodigious success as a drama and was about to be repeated for the twenty-third night at the English Royal Opera House'. Mary Shelley herself attended a performance on 29 August 1823. Whatever Mary Shelley's misgivings, having concluded 'the story is not well managed', the public were smitten and undeterred by controversy and protests against its attack on the Christian faith. Indeed, by 1826 there were said to have been about fifteen play versions based to some extent on Shelley's novel. First published anonymously in 1818, the second edition of Shelley's novel Frankenstein was issued on 11 August 1823, (the day before this 13th performance of Peake’s play), this time printing Mary Shelley's name as the author.

LOPEZ DE SEGURA, Ruy. Il giuoco de gli scacchi di Rui Lopez, Spagnuolo; nuouamente tradotto in lingua italiana da m. Gio. Domenico Tarsia ...In Venetia, presso Cornelio Arriuabene, 1584In 4to. 201x146 mm. Half boards binding, spine on vellum. Pages [8], 214, [2, Colophon]. Printer’s device on titlepage, woodcut initials and ornaments, Italic and Roman type. Woodcut Chessboard on leaf a4 and several woodcut illustrations depicting chess pieces. Some foxing and occasional browning, sign of humidity on top margin of few leaves. Very rare first and only edition in Italian. It is one of the first great books of chess theory and history, and contributed considerably to the development of the game in Europe by promoting en passant capture which was then ignored in Italy; of notable interest is the first analysis of the "Spanish part" also known as "Ruy López opening". Ruy López de Segura was one of the strongest chess players of the 16th century: in this fundamental treatise he narrates the origin of chess, explains the rules of the game, giving for the first time a complete picture of the openings then known. In 1560 he went to Rome for some commitments related to his status as a clergyman and in the capital of the popes he had the opportunity to challenge some of the strongest Italian chess players, including Leonardo da Cutro, the famous "puttino", at the time credited as one of the strongest in the world. By winning the important challenge against Leonardo da Cutro, he was recognized by his contemporaries as a sort of ante litteram world champion.Olschki: “C’est la seule édition italienne de ce livre extremement rare”.

The Encyclopedie is the most important work published in the 18th century, one of the founding books in the history of ideas in the western world. The Encyclopédie's success was immediate, and its influence incalculable in all fields of knowledge, from science to philosophy via politics and economics: suffice it to mention, among its editors, the names of Rousseau, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Necker, Condorcet, Quesnay and Turgot.PMM, 200: «A monument in the history of European thought; the acme of the age of reason; a prime motive force in undermining the ancien régime and in heralding the French Revolution; a permanent source for all aspects of eighteenth-century civilization. Each volume as it appeared caused a sensation throughout Europe. The court, the church, the judiciary were outraged; the number of subscribers, originally one thousand, rose to four thousand. In 1759, the seven volumes so far published were banned by the French Attorney-General and condemned by the Pope. Le Breton, however, carried on clandestinely and in 1765 completed the tenth volume, the last according to the prospectus». Traces of wear on the binding, sporadic foxing, a few pages and Plate II with slight browning, a tiny trace of humidity in the lower corner of p. 277, a nice copy. First edition of this work by the French explorer, geographer and mathematician La Condamine (1701-1774), based on his experiences in South America. He was one of the "Académiciens du Pérou" chosen by the "Académie des Sciences" to journey to Peru for the purpose of measuring several degrees of the meridian at the Equator. By comparing their results with those obtained by a similar mission to Lapland, the Académie hoped to settle the controversy between the Newtonians and Cartesians over whether the earth was flattened or elongated at the poles. The Peru expedition embarked for South America in 1735, reaching Quito in June of the following year. Their geodetic measurements, completed in 1743, validated Newton's hypothesis. Illustrated with 6 plates outside the text with the map of the itinerary of La Condamine and the plan of Quito; the large folded map with the territory of Quito is by M. d'Anville. Complete work with the folded leaf, on page 163, which reports the observations of La Condamine and two of his companions, Louis Godin and Pierre Bouguer.Ref. Marchese di MIRABEAU, Victor Riqueti – QUESNAY, François. Élémens de la philosophie rurale. Le Haye, chez les libraires associes, 176712mo. 170x100 mm. Contemporary binding in full marbled leather, rich gilt rules and title on the spine. Pages [6], CVI, 339, [2, Errata]. A folded engraved plate. Occasional foxing, repaired tears in the engraved plate, overall fresh copy with wide margins. Rare first edition. Synthetic version of the most important theoretical work of the physiocratic school, 'De la Philosophie rurale', written jointly by Quesnay and Mirabeau. François Quesnay et la physiocratie: «produit d'une intime collaboration entre Mirabeau et Quesnay, il s'agit en effet de l'explication générale de l'Économie à partir de l'idée centrale de la circulation des dépenses telle qu'elle est schématisée par Quesnay dans son Tableau économique » Mirabeau considered the 'Elemens' essential for the diffusion and understanding of the theories of the physiocratic movement. For this reason he sets out the elementary principles of economic science in an important preliminary speech, in order to combat the theory exposed by Linguet in his work Théorie des lois civilis, published shortly before. On the engraved plate is a prospectus illustrating Quesnay's 'Tableau Economique'.
