Gina Parr Mysore India 2013 Photograph Printed on Hahnemuehle 310gsm German Etching Paper with Archival Inks Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Scape, memory and identity are ever present in my work. My childhood, spent diversely in wide-open spaces with my father fishing for mackerel and at home with my mother's hoarding and mental health issues, defined my relationship to the sea and land: The uncertainty of the deep, the spirit and memory of the open space, evoking freedom and connectedness. JUAN BAUTISTA DE GUZMÁN (Granada, 1850 - Barcelona, 1898)."Flamenca", 1891.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the lower right corner.Measurements: 86 x 46 cm; 108 x 68 cm (frame).Representative of the Andalusian costumbrismo, Juan Bautista de Guzmán specialised in popular scenes of bullfighters, peasants, taverns and courtyards of Granada. On this occasion he offers us a scene set in the interior of an Andalusian courtyard with a sandy floor. The protagonist, a lady dressed in a flamenco dress and draped in a Manila shawl, is leaning jauntily against a wall on which the show is being advertised. Costumbrista genre painting was a characteristic exponent of Andalusian folklore during the period of the rise of Romanticism and 19th-century Orientalism. Traditionally, Spanish painting and literature have been interested in popular customs and types. The arrival of Romanticism enlivened this trend, bringing to the Hispanic tradition the vision that foreigners had of our people, due to the snobbery of a Europeanising and liberal national bourgeoisie which, also due to foreign influence and under the Romantic fashion, turned its eyes to the people and monuments of the past. This, which was general throughout Spain, was particularly prevalent in Andalusia, as this land was the dream destination of foreigners, and where the influence of the vision they had of the Spaniards and their peculiar customs had to be felt most strongly.Juan Bautista de Guzmán Orante was a Spanish painter born in Granada but settled in Malaga as a child. The Malaga painter Leoncio Talavera passed on his love of painting to him. He painted his first picture by copying a painting by his friend Talavera. In 1879 he took part in the Cadiz Exhibition, winning a silver medal, and in 1881 he exhibited his works at the National Exhibition in Madrid. After settling in Barcelona, he took part with two paintings in the Fine Arts Exhibition of the Catalan capital in 1888 and 1891 with "Garden", "A Wrong Way", "A Hungarian Family Begging for Charity", "A Burro muerto la barley al rabo" and "Sensibility", as well as in the 1896 edition.

ISMAEL DE LA SERNA GONZÁLEZ (Guadix, Granada, 1898 - Paris, 1968)."Still life violin". Watercolour and coloured pencils.Signed in the lower right area.Size: 30 x 41,5 cm; 48 x 54,5 cm (frame).Ismael González de la Serna began his art studies in Granada and concluded them in Madrid, at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. In his early years he developed an eclectic pictorial style, drawing on impressionist, symbolist and modernist sources. One of the first examples of his youthful language can be found in the illustrations he made for his childhood friend Federico García Lorca, in what was to be his first book, "Impresiones y paisajes" (1918). That same year, Ismael de la Serna held his first exhibition in Granada, and shortly afterwards he presented his works at the Ateneo in Madrid. In 1921 he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic horizons, joining the circles of the School of Paris. Among his Parisian friends was Pablo Picasso, who influenced his work but was, above all, the Granada painter's protector. During this period De la Serna's style was permeable to the influences of the avant-garde, particularly Cubism and Expressionism, which he worked in a highly personal manner. Likewise, the initial influence of Impressionism was always evident in his work. The year 1927 marked the beginning of a period of strong influence on his work, which began with the painter's solo exhibition at the influential Paris gallery of Paul Guillaume. This exhibition was followed by many others, both in Paris and in Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Granada and Mexico. In 1928 he was commissioned by the director of "Cahiers d'Art", Christian Zervos, to illustrate a special edition of twenty sonnets by Góngora. The key to his recognition lies in his sensual interpretation of the forms of Cubism, based on the relevance of a drawing with a sinuous and highly decorative line, combined with strong chromatic contrasts. With a marked spatial sense and without ever abandoning figuration, De la Serna mainly depicted still lifes, in which he emphasised the sensory aspect of his painting with metaphorical sensory references such as music, fruit or open windows. He also worked on landscapes and portraits. After inaugurating the activities of the Asociación de Artistas Ibéricos in Madrid with a solo exhibition in 1932, the painter embarked on new avenues of artistic experimentation which, after the Second World War, led to a more schematic and simplified style of painting, close to contemporary abstract solutions. Ismael de la Serna is represented in the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Fine Arts Museums of Granada and Seville, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Popular Museum of Contemporary Art in Vilafamés and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, among many others.

Five million Minis were produced between the revolutionary little car's launch in 1959 and the end of production in 2000 but individuality has never been a problem as there's never been any lack of choice between different models produced over the years. The Paul Smith was one of the most distinctive of a bewildering array of limited-edition Minis produced since this timeless classic's 25th birthday and it was the first edition to cost more than £10,000, retailing at £225 more. Sharing the basic specification with the revived Mini Cooper, it featured the 64bhp 1275cc fuel-injected engine, Minilite-type alloy wheels, full leather seats and that distinctive purple/blue hue chosen by the famous Bristol-owning clothes designer, colour-coded to include the wheel arch extensions and mirrors. With the extra torque from the twin-point fuel-injected engine, it was one of the few Mini variants to be fitted with the tall 2.76:1 final drive ratio, making it one of the most refined and relaxed Minis to drive. Just 1800 were built, of which only 300 were earmarked for the home market, the rest going to Japan although several have since been repatriated. Registered on 15th October 1998, this well-presented example is believed to have been the demonstrator for Richardsons of Tiverton for the first two months of its life before being purchased by its first owner who kept the vehicle for 18 years. A three owner from new example, the current vendor acquired the Mini circa five years ago and has maintained it to a high standard ensuring all service and maintenance work has been completed where necessary. Offered with many bills and invoices, a good service history, the original handbook and dealership brochure, V5 registration document and a MoT test certificate valid until April 2022. Rarely do Paul Smith editions come to the open market and this example offered without reserve should not be missed.

The Bentley Continental GT was the first car released by Volkswagen AG after their acquisition of the company in 1998. It was unveiled at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, followed by Le Mans, Goodwood Festival of Speed and the annual Bentley Drivers Club meeting at Silverstone. The car differed significantly from the previous Continental R & T models in terms of its concept; although much of the car is hand-assembled, this Bentley is made in significantly larger numbers than previously. As a result, the price at launch was substantially less than the Continental R, thus exposing the car to a much wider and new customer base as a more affordable car. The Continental GT is equipped with a 6.0 litre, twin-turbocharged W12 engine and produces 552bhp at 6,100rpm and capable of travelling from 0-62mph in an impressive 4.8 seconds. Torsen-based permanent four-wheel drive is standard. This wonderful limited edition model of this popular marque is presented in black with black leather interior. These models were built to celebrate 60 years of hand assembled car production at its historic factory at Crewe, the Diamond Series was a run of just 400 cars worldwide with only 61 cars available for the UK market. It offers unique features to an already high spec, high performance coupe. This is a stunning car powered by the W12 6.0 litre twin turbo engine. One off features is its unique 20 inch, 14 spoke alloy wheels which offer more than a glimpse of the huge carbon ceramic brakes introduced on this model which was a production first for Bentley. Features derived from the Mulliner specification include, drilled foot pedals, knurled chrome and leather gear lever, diamond quilted stitching to seats and doors, including the Bentley name embossed into all seats and an alloy fuel filler cap. Subtle front wing badges and tread plates add to the limited edition feel. This car has been serviced mainly by Bentley dealerships and the invoices for these can be seen in the history file, with its last service being carried out in 2021 by Bradshaw. It also comes with its build sheet and stamped service book.

Before David Plastow left his senior position at Rolls-Royce following the take-over of Vickers plc, he had been responsible for a series of models, amongst which was the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. The Silver Spirit was unveiled in October 1980 as a replacement for the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. The coachwork of the Silver Spirit had been designed at the in-house styling centre by Fritz Feller and gave the impression of being stretched in comparison with the bodies of the previous generation. Direct comparison, however, showed only small differences. The new models had slightly grown in length and width; height had been cut a little, although the styling was more modern than that of its predecessor. The interior was dominated by the expected combination of fine wood and sumptuous leather. The Silver Dawn is a special edition of the Silver Spur III with several additional options, such as Electronic Traction Assistance System. In a short model run of just three years, only 237 cars were produced worldwide with around 80 cars staying in the UK, making the Silver Dawn one of the rarest Rolls-Royce cars produced in recent times. Originally supplied by Michael Powles Ltd in Leicester and first registered on 22nd August 1996, this Rolls-Royce presents in beautiful condition. The Peacock Blue paintwork is virtually unmarked as is the contrasting Magnolia interior. The seats are piped in blue, and the Wilton carpets are in dark blue as are the lambswool rugs. A copy of the original build sheets accompanies this Silver Dawn, clearly this has been a very well cared for example. There are a significant number of invoices in the history folder from P & A Wood and more latterly from a specialist. Open the door on this exquisite motor car and the smell of leather, together with the walnut dashboard and door cappings, combine to make the interior of this premium marque vehicle a special place. Travelling in such comfort cannot be underestimated. Supplied with a V5C registration document, together with an MoT test certificate valid until 12th December 2022. These blue-blood Rolls-Royces are on the rise and good examples, limited production cars are worth investing in.

Alpine, once an independent company specialising in faster Renaults, and later a Renault subsidiary, established a fine competition history with the stunning Alpine A110, winning the 1973 Monte-Carlo Rally and World Championship. The successor was the Alpine A310 that was initially powered by a tuned 17TS/Gordini four-cylinder engine, the six-cylinder 2,664cc V6 option arriving in 1976. The A310 was labour intensive, having been developed for small-scale artisanal production, the basis being a hefty tubular steel backbone chassis clothed in a fibreglass shell. The engine was mounted longitudinally in the rear driving the wheels through a manual five-speed gearbox. With the weight a mere 980kg, the Renault Alpine was a fine performer indeed.   This rare example, which began life as a standard A310,  was the subject of a large article in Classic Cars magazine June 2019 edition. It is presented in white with black leather interior which was trimmed by a Renault specialist some years ago and looks great. The car was sold new to its first owner in France in November 1978, who transformed it into GT specification and in the history file is the original sale brochure which came with the car, albeit in French! Like so many seventies supercars, the massive wheel arch extensions were part of a Group 4 homologation overhaul intended to accommodate a new kind of motor sport-bred tyre, in this case, the Pirelli P7. Its all alloy wide angle 2.7 litre V6 is directly related to a Le Mans winner and fed by a bizarre looking combination of single and twin choke Solex carburettors. Its Alpine Fleschmann Nogano alloys were made exclusively for the GT pack by PLS and look superb on this ultra-rare French sports car. These Alpines were known for their steering which enabled drivers to use it to great success on Rallies and Hillclimbs throughout Europe. Its black leather interior also combines one or two hints that it was used at some point in its history for timed rallies with the presence of twin stopwatches and a timing device, although there is no suggestion or proof that it competed competitively in period or since! This is a superb opportunity to acquire a rare and exciting sports car from the 1970s which still looks very cool!Interested parties please note that this Alpine is a standard A310 and not a GT as described. JEAN LOUIS DUBROCA (1757-1835). JEAN-JACQUES DESSALINES (Saint-Domingue, 1758 - Haiti, 1806)."Life of J.J. Dessalines, chief of the blacks of Saint-Domingue.Translated from French.DuBroca, Jean-Louis, author.Publisher: Juan López Cancelada in the office of Mariano de Zuniga y Ontiveros, Mexico City, 1806.Rear cover.Stamp of the Pan American Public Library. With frontispiece and nine plates.Measurements: 20.5 x 14.5 cm.The engravers of the plates are José Simón de Larrea and Manuel López López, and they consist of portraits of the leaders of the famous slave revolt led by Jena-Jacques Dessalines, together with some scenes of the atrocities committed. The rebellion against French rule in Haiti (Saint-Domingue) is described in great detail, somewhat skewed by the French approach to this revolt, but in keeping with the grim events that took place. Jean-Jacques Dessalines fought alongside L'Ouverture for Haiti's freedom, and became the new nation's first emperor: his bloodthirsty ways were notorious even in his day. The engravers depict his subjects as virtual caricatures of themselves, with oversized lips and noses and bulging eyes, and engaging in brutal atrocities, while the whites take on more human forms. The plates are exclusive to this edition and appear nowhere else, and are of high quality. Emperor Maximilian owned a copy of this book. Dubroca, the author, wrote a similarly disparaging biography of Toussaint L'Ouverture. The publisher, Juan López Cancelada, was a Spanish-born émigré who became a well-known polemicist and political agitator in Mexico: it is possible that he published this book as a warning about what might happen in Mexico with its huge "caste" population. First Mexican edition and first with plates.Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Saint-Domingue, 1758 - Port-République, Haiti, 1806) was a leader of the Haitian Revolution who proclaimed the country's independence on 1 January 1804 and became its first ruler. In 1804 he proclaimed himself emperor under the name of Jacques I. A former slave, he took part in the slave revolts in the French colony of Saint Domingue. In the service of Toussaint L'Ouverture, he reached the rank of general and when the latter was deposed by French troops sent by Napoleon to reconquer the island, he was appointed to lead the troops in the south. However, after Toussaint was arrested and sent to France and with the arrival of news of the reestablishment of slavery in other French colonies, Dessalines organised a mutiny against the French forces in October 1802, which he confronted in a bloody struggle. He finally defeated the French at the Battle of Vertières in 1803 and drove them from the island. He ordered the extermination of the remaining white minority in the country, which resulted in the deaths of between 3000 and 5000 people during the period between February and April 1804.4 In September 1804, he proclaimed himself emperor and was officially crowned on 8 October in the city of Le Cap. Between 1801 and 1805, the Haitian army made bloody raids on the eastern part of the island, with fierce troops commanded by General Jean Jacques Dessalines. The Haitian military troops led by Dessalines, who became Emperor, did the most damage to the eastern part of the island in its history. They sacked and burned the towns of Monte Plata, La Vega, Cotuí, San Francisco de Macorís, San José de las Matas and Montecristi.
