Evolution.- Quetelet (Lambert Adolphe Jacques) A Treatise on Man and the development of his faculties, translated by Robert Knox, first edition in English, double column, 7 lithographed plates at end, ex-library copy with stamps, translator's name added in ink to title, small chip to lower corner of title, lightly browned throughout, library cloth, spine gilt, 8vo, Edinburgh, William and Robert Chambers, 1842.⁂ Rare copy of this important work. This edition contains a new preface by the author to defend his work from objections brought against it subsequent to the publication of the Paris edition. The publisher was the anonymous author of Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation, 1844. Quetelet was a Belgian astronomer, mathematician and sociologist, who founded and directed the Brussels Observatory. He developed what we today call the Body Mass Index (BMI), which was originally named the Quetelet Index.

Despite his mathematical achievements Oppel is better known for his contributions to mining and metallurgy. Having held a number of senior positions in the mines of the Ore Mountains he went on to be a founder of the Bergakademie Freiburg, a specialist mining school. It was the first of its kind and remains the oldest surviving institution in this field. The core of the school's collections are made up from Oppel's own, and include minerals, books and mining models.
