Magnificent Production Muldoon (Paul) Incantata, (Graphic Studio 1994) A magnificent edition of Muldoon's famous lament for Mary Farl Powers. No elaborate puns, arcane allusions or verbal acrobatics. From first line: "I thought of you tonight, A leanbh, lying there in your long barrow " to last "and take in your ink-stained hands my own hands stained with tears" the grief is too intense to allow for the usual gymnastics. Ltd Edn. 75, signed: 25 numbered copies, for private distribution, 50 copies for Sale, This is copy No. 39. With prints by Farl Powers's fellow artists at the Graphic Studio, the book was designed by James O'Nolan. The text is in 12.5 Stone Serif, was printed letterpress by hand by Sean Sills at NCAD. The prints are on 250 gsm BFK Rives paper. Inside covers are Japanese hand-made paper. The binding, quarter-bound in linen and Fabriano Roma paper, with matching slipcase, was made at Museum Bookbindings, Dublin. Signed by poet and by artists Chris Reid, Patrick Hickey, Jas McCreary Patrick Pye, Carmel Benson, Maria Simmonds-Gooding, Micheal Farrell, James O'Nolan, Jennifer Lane, Brian Bourke and Alfonso Monreal. * Helen Bradley [1900-1979]- 'Going home from Gt. Aunt Janes':- signed bottom left oil on board 39.5 x 24.5cm * Notes There is an artist's card affixed to the reverse of the picture which reads as follows. 'The morning after Great Aunt Janes's birthday was bright and clear, so now that George and I had found where God lived, we badly wanted to see what it was like in daytime. We asked Grandma if she would take us for a walk down milking green to David Thomas's garden. Grandma loved gardens and plants, and so did David Thomas. 'Well children, get your hats on', and away we went. He was in his garden smoking his pipe and whilst he and Grandma talked George and I saw Gods's House and lo and behold there were lots of dogs sitting, waiting outside. There were all sorts of dogs, big dogs and little dogs and there were two actually sitting on the roof, and whilst we were watching a little old Lady, in a red shawl and carrying a heavy basket went past and up the steep path, 'Grandma', we cried, 'look at all those dogs', 'goodness me , whatever next' said Grandma. 'Its all right', said David Thomas, 'they are only waiting for their dinner; I believe Gods gone away and there's Mrs. Winterbottom on her way to feed them. I guess she has taken something on looking after that lot, I guess I shall have to lend a hand', and Grandma laughed and laughed and all this happened in the year 1906.' *Biography. Helen Layfield Bradley MBE ( 20 November 1900-19 July 1979) was an English artist born in Lees, Lancashire, England. Her paintings, mostly in oils, typically depict life in Lancashire in the Edwardian era. She began to paint when she was in her sixties, meeting the painter L.S. Lowry who encouraged her in the creation of a narrative style based on her own childhood memories. From 1965 she became as popular in the United States as in the United Kingdom. In 1971 Jonathan Cape published the first of four books And Miss Carter Wore Pink, which was an instant success. Editions were then published in German, French, Dutch and Japanese and a special edition produced for the US. The series, illustrated with Bradley's naïve paintings, topped the bestseller lists in the early 1970s. Bradley appeared on a number of television chat shows of the 70s, including Pebble Mill at One and the Russell Harty Show. She was also a guest on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs. The BBC and NBC network made documentaries about her life and the Northern Ballet adapted her work for the stage. Indeed, direct reference can be found in the Gandhi Archive to the Indian leader having signed the present book, where it is noted that a letter from Gates was received by Gandhi on 8th April 1928, in which Gates wrote of 'recollections of his first meeting in Madras and Gandhiji's autographing a copy of his writings'.

ZOLA EMILE: (1840-1902) French Writer. A good A.L.S., Emile Zola, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 31st August 1867, to 'Mon cher confrere', in French. Zola informs his correspondent that he will be able to send him the remainder of Un Mariage d'Amour in eight or ten days time, so the typesetters will have all the time they need, and continues 'It had been decided that the novel would be published in three parts. I very much regret that you were not able to publish all of the copy I sent you in the September edition. You must still have twenty to twenty five pages left over. I will be sending you about eighty, so that will make a total of a little over a hundred. Please try, therefore, to set enough space aside for me so that it all goes into the October edition. You will do me a great service, since I would like to be able to publish it all at once and I do not want to wait until December, the month of gift books. The readers really would find it a very long novel if it were published over four months. You will see that I am pleading the case for the magazine as well as for myself'. Zola concludes 'In any case, you know that by counting the pages that you already have and those that I am going to send you, the novel will not amount to more than a hundred or so leaves. You can therefore decide on and finalise your page layout, no matter what'. A letter of good literary content. Some very light, minor age wear and a small, neat split to the left edge of the central horizontal fold, otherwise VG Un Mariage d'Amour, better known by its alternative title Therese Raquin is a novel by Zola which was first published, as the present letter illustrates, in serial format in the journal L'Artiste in 1867. It was published in book format in the December of the same year. The novel was a commercial and artistic success for Zola and achieved additional publicity when the critic Louis Ulbach described it as 'putrid' in a long diatribe. A play of the novel was first performed in 1873.

An early 20th century Suffragette pendant/brooch With alternating circular-cut peridot and amethysts set centrally to the open framework, flanked by seed pearl set angular arms, suspending a seed pearl and amethyst drop, length 4cm Footnote: Mrs Pethwick-Lawrence first proclaimed the WSPU's colours of green, white and purple in the Spring 1908 edition of “Votes for Women”. Purple symbolised dignity, white purity and green hope. The WSPU presented specially commissioned pieces of jewellery to leading suffragettes, using stones such as peridot, amethyst and pearls. It was popular to see these stones in jewellery during the late 19th century, before 1903, therefore these pieces cannot be connected with the suffragettes. Also a popular myth that colours green, white and violet to spell GWV as an acronym for “Give Women Votes.” CONDITION REPORT: No apparent damage to mount or setting The steel clasp looks original and works well, no 'wobble' at all Some lustre wear to the seed pearls Stones in fair condition, good saturation, lively 2.5cm x 4cm
