Rider's British Merlin was first published in 1656 and continued to appear for nearly two hundred years. Despite the gap in numbering on the plates in the third item the work seems to be complete, the plates matching those in the Bodleian Library copy of a 1777 edition.

C.R.Alford loosely inserted (with integral blank, additional addressed sheet edged in black & black seals, & addressed envelope), modern blue morocco, gilt, spine gilt in compartments, g.e., 8vo, Cambridge, 1857.⁂ Famous novel about Rugby School set in the 1830s and featuring Thomas Arnold. Dr Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), progressive headmaster of Rugby School from 1828-41, who introduced significant reforms to the curriculum and moral tone of the school which were subsequently adopted by many other Public Schools. In 1841 he became Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford. This letter is addressed to Rev.C.R.Alford and dated 3rd May 1842, accepting an invitation to take a service at Alford's church St.Matthews in Oxford on 5th June. Arnold died very suddenly of a heart attack on 12th June, aged only 46.

First published in 1699 it went through many editions up to 1768 but this contains "several descriptions and episodes never before printed".

Gardening.- La Quintinye (Jean de) The Compleat Gard'ner: or Directions for Cultivating and Right Ordering of Fruit-Gardens, and Kitchen-Gardens, edited by George London and Henry Wise, second edition, engraved frontispiece (creased), 10 folding engraved plates, some minor worming to lower margin, title and first few leaves stained, front free endpaper detached, contemporary calf, foot of spine torn, [Henrey 220; Wing L432], Printed for M. Gillyflower, 1699.⁂ Jean-Baptiste de la Quintinye was for some 25 years Louis XIV's Potager du Roi or director of the fruit and vegetable gardens. During this time he pioneered many pruning and growing techniques, including the forcing of asparagus in winter and the successful production of figs in June. His gardens were the talk of England and the Continent and his books were translated into a number of languages. His success was demonstrated when Charles II twice attempted to lure the gardener away from Louis. La Quintinye was a close friend of John Evelyn.Provenance: Anne Tremayne (early ink inscription on title).
