Constable was particularly interested in the natural world and made attempts at classification (pre-Linnaeus) but despite his progressive thinking in the advancement of science he still believed that it was possible to cross-breed chickens with rabbits.

COPAC lists copies of the 1863 edition in the V & A and 1864 in the British Library but no others, and WorldCat has no listing of an 1865 edition.

The folding maps attempt to show the earth's surface in relief including the floor of the oceans; the western hemisphere shows California as an island. A third and fourth part were published later, in 1689.

Catlin (George) The Breath of Life, or mal-Respiration and its effects upon the enjoyments & life of man (manu-graph), first English edition, lithographed facsimile manuscript, illustrations, with A.L.s from John Tucker thanking for the loan of the book and with 4 flyers advertising his "Anti-Snorer" Elastic Belt (one a corrected proof) loosely inserted, contemporary roan-backed cloth with original lithographed wrappers mounted on boards, rubbed and soiled, 1862; with a small bundle of trade catalogues and advertisements for other electric belts or corsets, soap, toothpaste, hair curlers, lime juice, stoves etc., many pictorial, some chromolithographed, a few cut-out shapes, v.s. (a bundle) ⁂ Catlin's book, first published in letterpress in New York in 1861, recommends the Native American way of sleeping with the head raised and tipped forward to prevent breathing through the mouth, a custom which he claims produces improved health. John Tucker's letter remarks how he suffered from sleeping with his mouth open and as a result of reading Catlin's work he invented his belt to keep the mouth shut during repose.

The Duke of Gloucester, nephew of George III, was the first President, and William Wilberforce one of its leaders. The abolitionist William Roscoe of Liverpool had proposed that trade with Africa would be the greatest benefit to promoting civilisation in Freetown but George Harrison advises caution. COPAC lists 3 copies of his pamphlet (BL, Newcastle University, and the Society of Friends).

America.- Bownas (Samuel) An Account of the Life, Travels, and Christian Experiences in the Work of the Ministry..., first edition, with final advertisement leaf, H6 stained and lower margin cut away, contemporary ink inscription "William Brown's Book Bott 5 mo. 30.1757 Cost 2/-" on front pastedown, contemporary speckled calf, gilt, old paper label to spine, a little rubbed, spine repaired at head, [Sabin 7097], 8vo, by Luke Hinde, 1756.⁂ Samuel Bownas (1677-1753) was a Quaker minister who travelled to America to spread the Gospel but was imprisoned on Long Island for preaching, being released after a year. His book includes encounters with Native Americans and with Elizabeth Hanson who had been held captive with her children and whose story he later published in 1760.William Brown - it is tempting to wonder whether this might be the same William Brown whose father, also William (1658-1746), emigrated to America with his family in 1682 and became one of the early settlers of the Quaker settlement of Nottingham, Pennsylvania. Certainly the inscription contains a date in the Quaker style.
