Library Hub records only 4 copies.James Lackington (1746-1815) is credited with revolutionizing the book trade. His books were sold cheaply but for cash only (no credit), he bought up whole libraries, sold publishers' remainders for bargain prices, and created the largest bookshop in Britain with 500,000 volumes and known as 'The Temple of the Muses', in Finsbury Square.

When he died he left a bequest to his niece Mary Anning.

Tauchnitz, 1873; and 10 others by or on the Rossetti family, 8vo (13)*** Pettee writes in the third, "This volume was bought in Siena, Italy, in the summer of 1909, to be used for a lesson in antique bookbinding...The attempted illumination on the cover represents one of the many unfinished beginnings of my life...". Todd & Bowden illustrate an Italian illuminated vellum binding on Rossetti's Ballads & Sonnets.

The Republic...in Ten Books, translated by Henry Spens, first edition in English, advertisement leaf at end, a few spots, very occasional light soiling, engraved bookplate of William Macdowall of Castlesemple, contemporary calf, spine ruled in gilt with red morocco label, a little rubbed and spotted, spine ends slightly worn, [Gaskell 423], 4to (240 x 180mm.), Glasgow, Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1763.*** A good wide-margined, handsomely-printed edition of this important work. This translation by Spens, a minister of the parish of Wemyss in Fife, was used in the Everyman Library edition from 1906 onwards.

A later pencil manuscript note in vol.1 reads: "fine large copy, perf[ect] throughout, £13.0.0. Merly binding. The identical copy which sold for £20.7.0. at Willetts' (the Merly) Sale. Sir Mark Sykes' copy sold only for £17.0.0. It was very indifferent".

Byzantine architecture.- Wheler (George) An Account of the Churches, or Places of Assembly, of the Primitive Christians; from the churches of Tyre, Jerusalem, and Constantinople. Described by Eusebius, first edition, 5 folding engraved plates (plate 2 lacking bottom section), lacking initial and final 3 blanks, old ink signatures of John Lowe and Robert Lascelles Carr to title, plates with short tears repaired, small rust-hole to G4, contemporary sheep, rubbed, [Atabey 1330; Blackmer 1788; Wing W1606], small 8vo, by S. Roycroft, for R. Clavell, 1689.*** Scarce work on the early churches. "An especially interesting work for its period. At this time very few antiquaries were interested in Byzantine architecture". *** Please note, the description of this lot has changed *** Erotica.- Muses en Belle Humeur (Les) ou Chansons et Autres Poesies Joyeuses, engraved title with vignette of satyrs and naked women dancing round a statue of Priapus, lacking final 2 leaves R1-2, 3pp. of additional bawdy songs supplied in 19th century hands at end, title and final leaf of text soiled, pretty contemporary red morocco with gilt roll-tool border, spine gilt in compartments with floral ornaments and green roan label (chipped at edge), g.e., a little rubbed, 12mo, Ville Franche [?Paris], 1742 [?1760].*** The first erotic song-book, a pirated edition of that originally printed in an edition of twelve copies on the private press of the Duc d'Aguillon.Library Hub records only 3 copies (BL, Oxford, and Winchester College), citing pagination as xiv, 260pp. but this seems erroneous as WorldCat states xiv, 184pp. with collation [*]¹, A-Q⁶, R², as this copy appears to have been.
