We have been able to trace only four other copies at auction since 1981 the last in 1994. The edition is copied nearly page for page from the Paris Marnef edition of 8th March 1498 and uses the same woodblocks most of which had first appeared in the first edition of Pierre Riviere`s French verse translation.

The other texts include the first edition of Horapollo`s Hieroglyphica Tarrhaeus and Diymus` proverbs Ponticus on allegories in Homer and Apologus Aesopi de Cassita apud Gellium.

This version was first published as a facsimile plate in Le Parnasse Satyrique (Brussels 1864) on one folio sheet whereas in this copy it is on two 8vo pp. The two versions are otherwise virtually identical including corrections and underlinings of words and letters. The other manuscript material seems to be in other hands and together the volume forms a complete collection of all Baudelaire`s poetry available up to 1864 perhaps prepared by Baudelaire himself or his publisher Poulet-Malassis.

Rorerts [sic] 1714. *** The poem was originally published in 1705 as “The Grumbling Hive” but this is the first edition to contain the Remarks as well as to be published as `The Fable of the Bees`. A later edition followed in the same year and contained several corrections. Highly controversial when first published; `The Fable of the Bees` is now seen as containing many of the founding principles of modern economic thought.

He printed the book in 5 different printing houses simultaneously even so the first edition sold out within the first week of publication necessitating the swiftly printed second and third issues which appeared in consecutive months.

Tristram Shandy did not last.” Sterne`s masterpiece has since gone on to influence writers as diverse as Goethe Joyce and Marx.

Joyce (James) Ulysses first edition printed in England number 88 of 100 copies signed by the author from an edition of 1000 title in blue & black prospectus loosely inserted presentation inscription to Gaston Levi from Lord Ivor Churchill with an A.L.s. from Churchill loosely inserted original vellum gilt to a design by Eric Gill t.e.g. others uncut slightly rubbed slip case [Slocum & Cahoon 23] 8vo 1936. *** “I`ve put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant and that`s the only way of insuring one`s immortality.” - James Joyce Levi was a war-time associate of General de Gaulle the inscription is dated January 1943 the book appears to have been a wedding gift. The letter is dated Feb. 22nd: “It seems a long time ago since we struggled with the problems of welfare at and often wonder what happened to many of the personalities who assisted our enterprises.”
