Stan has produced a complete series of in depth tutorials in book and DVD for see here for details. George - Govinder Nazran Limited Edition 79/600  - Mounted and Framed 49x75cmArtist Statement My art training began in Bradford in the North of England, where I studied Graphic Design from 1980 to 1983. I then went on to study for a Higher Diploma in Graphic Design, specializing in illustration, at Lincoln Art College. Once I completed all my formal training I decided to move to London, approaching all of the major city publishers with my portfolio. It was there that I worked on illustrations for children’s books and after 6 months moved to Cambridge where I continued working as a freelance illustrator. Shortly after, I moved back to my home town of Saltaire in West Yorkshire, taking up the position as a designer for a greetings card company where I was also involved in product design and development. Following that, I was involved in directing photo shoots and later became a photographic art director, traveling all over the world, for the next year, on fashion shoots. In 1993 I gave up my photographic job and spent the next five years working freelance on card designs with major publishers. It wasn’t until 1999 when I decided to enter the fine art market and approached Washington Green with my portfolio. They have since published over 40 of my designs and are currently developing some of my art into sculpture. IDEAS & INSPIRATIONS “If you don’t want anybody to know anything about you – don’t write a song!” I can’t remember where I heard this quote but it serves well to explain how one’s personality is revealed through a song, or in my case, a painting. I’m naturally a shy person and find it difficult to articulate my thoughts verbally. When I’m put on the spot and asked to explain my work, I usually end up a gibbering wreck, cursing myself later for my lack of verbal dexterity. My true personality reveals itself through my paintings. Many of my paintings are about good and evil – innocence and malevolence. When I was a child I remember believing what a wonderful and happy place the world was. I loved to learn about other people in other countries and wanted to visit them all. Of course, I now realize things aren’t quite as I once imagined, and the once distant places where I so wanted to be, are not so far away; they are actually on my doorstep. The world is a place where the innocent pay the heaviest price. It affects me deeply. It’s like living in the garden of ‘Good and Evil’. I can’t ignore it, so I depict it in the form of these innocent pictures. I leave it to the individual to look at my paintings and choose what they would like to see, innocence or malevolence – the good or the evil! Above all else, I am, and always will be, an eternal optimist. Optimism is one of the greatest gifts we possess. When I think about it, I think of the song ‘Fields of Gold’ by Sting – the lyrics sum it up! These two opposing juxtapositions ultimately explain many of my paintings. Look at the ones which have malevolent titles, mainly the evil cats. To me they are representations of evil. However, at first glance, the impression they exude is optimism. The wide-eyed cats and dogs always look petrified and are representations of the innocents. You can choose to see these paintings any way you like. See love and happiness or death and the Devil, it doesn’t matter so long as you see something and connect with it. You get the most from a painting if it connects with you. When you look at an abstract painting, you can see nothing or you can see it all – it’s either for you or it isn’t! For me this simple philosophy sums up what is art and what is not – you either like it or you don’t! My paintings are from my soul and I hope, honest. FROM PALETTE TO PICTURE Before I begin a painting, I start with a very rough preliminary colour sketch, which I may have done weeks or months ago. I keep my sketches along with notes and ideas in dozens of sketchbooks. The books are overstuffed with ragged bits of paper containing ‘those thoughts’ that just pop into your head unannounced at the strangest times. With the aid of my sketches, I know exactly what I’m going to paint when I’ve pinned up my canvas. It is very spontaneous. I have all my colours pre-determined. I use solid oil bars directly onto canvas, manipulating the paint with my fingers, using no brushes. The paint reacts with the heat from my fingers and the more you work it, the more fluid it becomes. It’s a wonderful and unusual medium to work with. Composition usually begins life as pure abstract shapes. Flow of line and form, as well as ‘negative shapes’, are important here. I also look for connections between shapes and link them with connecting lines. The balance and harmony of colour pull the whole composition together. The end result is part defined and part abstract. In my ‘pure’ abstracts I look to nature and emotion, and build on that. From life seen through the window of a speeding car or the blurred reflection of a city seen through bleary eyes, to the depiction of a single moment of intense emotion expressed through layers of paint. It’s a very pure art form.

The Fiancee - Zamy Steynovitz Limited Edition 193/300  - Mounted 69x92cmZamy Steynovitz was born in Liegnitz, Poland in 1951and at a very early age he aspired to be a painter. He won first prize in an art competition for children before immigrating to Israel in 1957. Formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and the Royal Academy in London, he completed his studies and began artistic pursuits in earnest. Zamy established his place in the art world after displaying his work in one-man exhibitions and art fairs around the world. Zamy’s art displays chromatic and thematic richness and his choice of subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition and folklore. Additionally, his work presents general themes such as Paris cafes, still lives, flowers, circuses and landscapes. In the early stages of his work, he used rich pastels and light brush strokes. When he visited South America in the early 1980’s, his work reflected his new surroundings and were further enhanced by local brightness and colorfulness. His art gained chromatic power; the palette became richer in tones, the textures thicker, and the background darker and more colorful. Together with these changes, the thematic persistence in his creation was maintained, allowing him to develop into a sensitive and mature artist. Zamy’s paintings are a reflection of his Eastern-European Jewish heritage, and they are enhanced by a rich choice of warm tones and colors. He evoked a universal humanistic idea in his creation; man’s connection to his heritage and physical surroundings. These are two imperatives aspects in our lives, which during these estranged technological times we should recall. As a result of his devotion to world peace, he became known in the circles of the Nobel Institute for Peace in Norway, and consequently was acquainted with many Nobel prize winners, such as Anwar Sadat, Menahem Begin, the Dalai Lama, Itzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu, Oscar Arias Sanchez, as well as many of the world’s greatest leaders and artists. Zamy tragically passed away in September of 2000

Image size 45x35 cm. - Mounted and Framed 73x63cmMarcel Mouly (February 6, 1918 – January 7, 2008) was a French artist who painted in an abstract style Mouly was born in Paris, France on February 6, 1918His interest in art developed in grade school. Mouly was first sent to drawing class as a form of punishment. At age 13 he left school to work, first as a beach vendor, then as an apprentice to a local dentist and later for a wine merchant delivering heavy baskets of wine. In 1935, while still employed by the wine merchant,Mouly began taking night classes in the arts at French Academies, the Cours Montparnasse 80, where he remained until he served in military duty during the Second World War beginning in 1938. After France fell to Germany in June 1940, Mouly became a civilian again, and earned a living working odd jobs. Mouly befriended an artist named Bernard la Fourcade, and the two established a studio in Auteuil. During a trip to Normandy in 1942, they were stopped by German officials and questioned for their lack of travel documentation, which was then required by the Vichy government. Mouly and la Fourcade were arrested shortly after their return to Paris, and mistakenly imprisoned as spies.During his solitary confinement, Mouly solidified his plans to become an artist. Marcel Mouly's work has been exhibited all over the world, including in the permanent collections of more than 20 museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Japan, the Museum of Geneva, the Museum of Modern Art in Helsinki, and Paris' Bibliotheque Nationale. Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Rouault, Vlaminck, Chagall, Vuillard and Dufy are his patrimony, and he has carried their mantel with unflagging dedication.

Matin Sur La Mer - Jean-Claude Picot Limited Edition 483/700  - Mounted 46x31cmSince 1956, Jean Claude Picot has been working exclusively as a professional artist. He is greatly influenced by the works of the Fauvist masters like Vlaminck, Derain, and Matisse, whose exuberant canvases drew great attention in the first decade of the 20th century for their revolutionary use of color, texture, and abstract form. These artists have inspired Picot for decades and you can find many similar characteristics in his work.Picot has developed a unique style that recalls a Post-Impressionist application of color, combined with the expressive qualities of form and line. His compositions are often calming, possessing his personal joie de vivre. He frequently captures the animation, romance, and essence of the landscape as his favored subject, although he also paints still lifes, cityscapes, markets, and festival scenes. All of his work is imbued with the same bright and cheerful character and is instantly identifiable.Since 1947 he has exhibited in over fifty one-person shows throughout the world including exhibitions in the United States, Belgium, Norway and Australia. Picot lives part of the year in the south of France and often draws on the Cote d’Azur – its visitors, beaches, and boat-filled harbors. His work abounds with natural beauty and features breathtaking panoramic views charged with the unique light of the Mediterranean. Picot works in a Post-Impressionist manner, reducing flowers, trees, houses, and figures to their essential forms. In the reviews of Picot’s most recent solo shows in Paris, Bordeaux and Oslo, the critics cited the affinities between the masters of Impressionism and early 20th Century Fauvism with Picot’s work. Today in the 21st Century, Picot continues the tradition of important French landscape painters.Picot actively works in many media – oil, acrylic, watercolor, etching, ceramic, and most recently, serigraphy and embellished serigraphy – which beautifully capture his vibrant color and painterly technique. His work is a favorite of collectors internationally and is represented in prestigious collections worldwide.
