Collodi (C.). The Story of a Puppet or The Adventures of Pinocchio, Translated from the Italian by M.A. Murray, Illustrated by C. Mazzanti, 1st ed. in English, UK issue, T. Fisher Unwin, 1892 [1891], half-title and title-page printed in black and red, numerous b & w vigns., stitching partially broken, blue floral patterned endpapers (lacking front free endpaper) and edges, pattern repeated to orig. white cloth, rubbed, spine darkened, and frayed at ends with sl. loss, lower cover and spine detached at lower hinge, sm. 8vo. A classic of children's literature, 'The Story of a Puppet' is the tale of an animated marionette, of talking crickets, of boys who turn into mules, and of other such fairy-tale devices; in fact earlier in his career Collodi worked on a translation of Mother Goose. However, Pinocchio's world is not a traditional fairy-tale world, instead containing the harsh realities of life - the need for food and shelter - and set in the very real area of Tuscany in Italy. It was a unique literary melding of genres for its time, and several of the book's concepts have become commonplace, particularly the long nose denoting liars. Indeed, Collodi did not originally intend the novel to be for children; in the first (serialized) edition Pinocchio dies a gruesome death hanged for his innumerable faults. At the request of his editor, Collodi added a happier fate for his puppet in which he is rescued and transformed into a real boy. Collodi, who died in 1890, was respected during his lifetime as a talented writer and social commentator, but his fame did not begin to grow until after Pinocchio appeared in this English translation, produced for the Christmas market in December 1891 (and published simultaneously in America by Cassell).
