New Forest. Faden (William), A Plan of His Majesty's Forest, called The New Forest in the county of Southampton, laid down from surveys taken by Thos. Richardson, Wm. King and Abm. and Wm. Driver, by order of the Commissioners of the Land Revenue appointed by an Act of Parliament passed in the 26th year of King George, 1789, a large scale map on ten engraved sheets, nine with bright contemporary hand colouring, incorporating a large uncoloured decorative cartouche, an index map, a list of the officers and wardens of the New Forest, a list of the Bailwicks and Walks in the forest, compass rose and table of explanation, large margins, very slight staining, each sheet approximately 575 x 580 mm, retaining contemporary endpapers, modern half calf gilt on marbled boards, slim upright folio A rare map of the New Forest whose accuracy ensured that it was in continual use in several editions up until the late 19th century. We can find only one other copy of this, the first edition, appearing in auction in the last twenty years. (1)

Y Noticia de la Expedicion que despues hizo para poblarle, 1st edition, Madrid: en la Imprenta Real de la Gazeta, 1768, three folding engraved plates at rear (first plate a little marked), erased and washed out ink stamp to verso of title with consequent small hole, occasional light spotting mostly to margins, marbled endpapers with crude cloth hinge repairs, contemporary marbled sheep, cloth reback with remains of spine relaid, area of leather loss to lower board and infilled with marbled paper, 4to Sabin 77094; Borba de Moraes, page II:777; Hill 1526; Palau 302364. The first edition of an important narrative of early naval adventure and exploration, published from a manuscript found at the University of Madrid after almost two centuries. Sarmiento de Gamboa was a Spanish naval commander who set off from Peru in pursuit of Sir Francis Drake in 1579. He never caught Drake, but did undertake an early passage through the Straits of Magellan, then made visits to the Azores and the African coast. Appended is Tom‚ Hernandez's account of Sarmiento's later disastrous Patagonia colony at 'Port Famine' (Puerto Hambre). (1)

Holme was also a member of the Women's Social and Political Union and, in 1909, was appointed as Emmeline Pankhurst's chauffeur, despite Sylvia Pankhurst having described Holme as, "... a noisy, explosive young person, frequently rebuked by her elders for lack of dignity." Holme is also believed to have been in a long-standing relationship with Evelina Haverfield, daughter of Lord Arbinger and Commandant in Chief of the Women's Reserve Ambulance Corps during the First World War. Through this link Holme was dispatched to Serbia and appointed to manage horses and trucks in the Scottish Women's Hospital Units. Haverfield died in 1920, and Holme outlived her partner by 49 years and died in Glasgow in 1969. (a carton)

*[Shakespeare Studies]. Gloucestershire - Treasury Receipt on vellum for rents, due in Westcombe, Gloucestershire, 1586, signed by Ric[hard] Stonley, one of the four tellers of the Exchequer of Receipt, 31 x 357mm The tellers of the Exchequer of Receipt were four officers charged with receiving and noting incoming revenue to the Exchequer and depositing it in the Treasury. Richard Stonley is famous as the first recorded purchaser of a work by Shakespeare; his journal records that on Tuesday, 12 June 1593, his purchase of the first edition of Shakespeare's first printed work, the narrative poem Venus and Adonis (London, 1593). Only one copy of this edition is now known to survive, being housed at the Bodleian Library. The Folger Shakespeare Library holds three volumes of Stonley's diaries, from 1581/82, 1593/94, and 1597/98. The last volume was written in London's Fleet Prison, to which Stonley had been sent in 1597 when he was convicted of embezzling more than £12,000 from the Exchequer over the course of his career.
