The Master of the Bedford Book of Hours, chromolithograph in gold and colours on paper, St Mark writing his Gospel - Additional MS. 18850, from The Bedford Book of Hours (1423-1430), from Illuminated Manuscripts in the British Museum, printed by William Griggs and published by Longmans and Co. in a limited edition of 500 in 1903. The Bedford Book of Hours has been described as one of the finest examples ofFrench art of the first half of the fifteenth century. In this particularly charming page St Mark’s symbolic lion can be seen helpfully holding the Evangelist’s ink-pot andpen-case between his teeth whilst on the right is what appears to be St Mark’s wash-stand and towel . George Grosz (1893-1959), lithograph on paper, Eheszene – Marriage Scene (1915), 20.5cm x 19.5cm, mounted, glazed and framed, from the first edition of EcceHomo, Berlin, 1923. Ecce Homo, Grosz’s depiction of the sordid and corrupt night-life of Berlin in the early 1920’s, is considered one of his greatest works, but only a small proportion of the first edition survived, as a result of the public book burnings of the Nazis in 1933 . CONAN DOYLE SIR ARTHUR. The Sign of the Four or The Problem of the Sholtos. Lippincott`s Monthly Magazine for February 1890 containing The Sign of the Four with frontis. & title running from p.145 to p.223. Price "25 cts". 24pp of adverts dated "Philadelphia, February, 1890" at the front (no ads. at end), concluding with VIII pp "With the Wits". Original publisher`s printed wrappers with adverts. A good example of this work in a late quarter red morocco slip case. First appearance in print of the second Sherlock Holmes story, American issue. Gibson and Green note "in the American issue of the magazine the frontispiece faces a special title-page (as here) and is therefore considered by some to constitute the first edition." This, believed to be the 2nd issue thereof, contains adverts dated "February 1890". The survival of this in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in the original wrappers is rare.

Kenneth Williams. British actor and star of the Carry On films. Two signed hand written letters, a signed photograph and signed, first edition copy of 'Back Drops' by Kenneth Williams. The letters on Kenneth William's headed paper are dated 27.2.88 and 15.2.88, both discuss the possibility or not of further Carry On movies being made, with original envelop dated with post mark 19 Feb 1988. The signed photograph (14 x 9cm) is dedicated to Gavin, to whom the letters, photograph and book were sent in reply by the actor. Roger Clark (1871-1961) was a friend and patron of the Housmans, he would fund the building of Longmeadow house for Laurence and Clemence Housman.

Rowling (J.K.) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, first edition, original pictorial boards, dust-jacket with very slight creases to spine, 8vo, 2005.*** This is one of the two copies of the first edition stolen from the warehouse at Corby prior to the launch of the book. A police investigation discovered that two security guards were responsible for the theft after they had tried to obtain money from the Sun newspaper in the form of a 'ransom'. The details of the book were not released early and the two responsible were dealt with by the criminal courts. After the court case, in which this copy was one of the exhibits, it was presented to the head of security as a reward for his work on the case.

The engravings were greeted with outstanding critical acclaim, prompting the release of 4 further editions by the end of 1827. The critic for The Literary Gazette proclaimed: "we know no artist, whose genius so perfectly fitted him being the illustrator of the mighty Milton; and in what we have seen of his conceptions he has more than realised the highest of our hopes. Proverbiorum Arabicorum, second edition, text in Latin and Arabic, woodcut printer's device on title, repeated on otherwise blank final leaf, ink annotations, marginal browning, disbound and loosely inserted within contemporary limp vellum, soiled and lacking ties, 8vo, Leiden, Ex Typographia Erpeniana, Linguarum Orientalium, prostant apud J. Maire, 1623. *** Scarce second edition of this study of Arabic proverbs. It first appeared in 1614, but the second edition is considered superior as it was revised by Erpenius just before his death in 1624.

Jewelled Binding.- Tennyson (Alfred, Lord) Maud, and other Poems, first edition, half-title, 8pp. advertisements at end, in a jewelled binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, green levant morocco, the front cover with a floral design of lilies, red and white roses with morocco onlays, and larkspur, richly gold tooled and jewelled with rubies, moonstones and topazes, the surrounding portion decorated with a diaper design of hearts and flowers and completed by a border enriched at the corners by moonstones and lettered in gilt with the lines "Come into the Garden, Maud...", the third verse of the same song is illustrated on back cover by a central design of a violin and bow entwined with jasmine and jewelled with topazes, surrounded by a simlar diaper to front cover, border with lines from the verse and with corners enriched with amethysts, spine gilt in compartments, mauve morocco doublures tooled in gold and inlaid with suggestions of the author's poem "The Brook", a central design of a dragon-fly with wings of pearl together with water-lilies, weeds and fishes enclosed by a decorative border, rear doublure with a similar design but different central design, white silk endpapers tooled in gold, g.e., housed in a silk and velvet lined morocco drop-back box (slightly rubbed), lacking the silk pull-up tie, 8vo, 1855.*** An exquisite copy of "the late poet laureate's celebrated work", so described by the accompanying stitched typed description of the binding signed by Sutcliffe which accompanies the book.
Hutton (James) Theory of the Earth, first edition, 2 engraved plates, one offset, in Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, vol. 1, some staining at beginning of volume, contemporary tree calf, gilt spine, cracking to joints, extremities worn, 4to, Edinburgh, J. Dickson, 1788.*** This is one of the earliest appearances of James Hutton's Theory of Earth and Theory of Rain. Both essays were incredibly influential, transforming the perception of the structure and formation of the Earth. His work laid the foundation of the study of geology.

Egypt.- Rosellini (Ippolito) I Monumenti dell'Egitto e della Nubia, 3 vol. in 5, plate vol. only, first edition, half-titles, 394 engraved plates, linen-backed, of which c.140 with full or partial hand-colouring, vol. 2 letterpress title loose, one or two marginal chips, marginal water-staining to vol. 3, some foxing and surface soiling, some light browning, ex-library copies with bookplate, small ink-stamp to titles or first plate, 19th century red half morocco, with flap to cover top-edge, library stickers to foot of spines, extremities quite worn, large folio, Pisa, Niccolò Capurro, 1832-44. *** The 3 plate volumes only, without the 9 accompanying text volumes. Rosellini had a great influence on Egyptology in Italy. These volumes, which are his most renowned work, were based upon his 1828 expedition to Egypt, with his mentor and friend Jean Francois Champollion. The work is divided into three parts: monumenti storici, monumenti civili and monumenti del culto.

A Poem in Ten Books, first edition, title in Pforzheimer's fifth state ('Angel' in imprint in roman), our copy with 'The Printer to the Reader' before 'The Argument' and with five lines excluding headline, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, A4 small repair to lower inner gutter, closely trimmed at head, very occasionally just touching a ruled border or headline, some spotting and staining, lightly browned, antique style blind-ruled calf, spine in compartments and with red morocco label, [Pforzheimer 718 & cf.716 (note); Grolier, Wither to Prior 603; Wing M2142], small 4to, Printed by S. Simmons, and are to be sold by T. Helder at the Angel in Little Brittain,1669.*** 'One of the greatest, most noble and sublime poems which either this age or nation has produced.' (John Dryden). In more recent times it was a great source of inspiration for Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials. Provenance: 'H. America.- Pownall (Thomas) A Topographical Description of Such Parts of North America as are Contained in the (Annexed) Map of the Middle British Colonies, &c. in North America, first edition, folding engraved map frontispiece, partially hand-coloured in outline and linen-backed (2 very small points marked in red ink, light creasing and short tear at inner-edge with very small loss, few tears and slight wear to some old folds with fractional loss), slight offsetting and some surface soiling to title, final 2 leaves reinforced at gutter affecting few letters, soiling and some surface abrasion to final f. verso with loss to some words, scattered spotting, light browning, ex-library copy with small ink-stamps to title and K1 lower margin, modern half calf, abrasion where label removed from lower cover, folio (map 535 x 860mm.), for J. Almon, 1776. *** A view of the interior of America as it was understood in the year of American Independence. Pownall draws upon Lewis Evans' influential map and analysis of 1755, his map issued from the original Evans plate but with substantial additions. He extends it east of Philadelphia to encompass all of New England and bordering parts of Canada, drawing upon his own explorations into the interior of Vermont and Maine. The western portion is updated to include the route of Christopher Gist's 1750-51 trek through the unexplored areas of Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio. The Appendix includes memoirs of other frontier explorers such as Lewis Evans (1743), Captain Anthony Von Schaik (1756) and Captain Harry Gordon (1766).

Dalton (John) A New System of Chemical Philosophy, vol. 1 only (of 2), comprising parts 1 & 2 in 1 vol., first edition, 8 engraved plates, ownership inscription of John Hargreaves dated March 1814 to front free endpaper, part 1 H1 tiny hole within text, part 2 with some light marginal damp-staining to plates, foxing, mainly affecting part 1 and plates, light browning, contemporary marbled calf, rebacked, wear to extremities, [PMM 261], 8vo, Manchester, for R. Bickerstaff, 1808-10. *** First edition of Dalton's classic work on the atomic theory of matter. The first part to a second volume appeared 17 years later in 1827, but was never followed by a second part.
Berridge (Jesse) The Sonnets of a Platonist, first edition, number 4 of 15 copies on Japanese vellum, bookplate of Robert Garrett, bound in attractive dark blue morocco with gilt-tooled border of tulips, spine gilt in compartments with tulip motifs and five raised bands, turn-ins ruled in gilt with three tulip heads to corners, t.e.g., others uncut, very slight rubbing to edges and a couple of bands, c.145 x 110mm., 1902 § Thomas (Helen) World Without End, first edition, old ink library stamp to rear endpaper, bound in red crushed morocco with border of leafy sprays, small dots and inlaid green flowers all tooled in gilt around title on upper cover and lines of small gilt leaves on lower, spine with vertical title and leafy tendril in gilt, turn-ins with similar flowers, leaves & dots in gilt, g.e., a little rubbed at edges with slight wear to some gilding and spine ends, c.185 x 120mm., 1931, 8vo (2)*** Jesse Berridge, later clergyman, archaeologist and novelist, was a close friend of Edward Thomas until the poet's death in 1917. Helen Thomas married Edward in 1899 while he was still an undergraduate and the second item is the second volume of her frank account of their life together.

The English (as here) and French editions were published concurrently in New York, but the French edition in France was not published until 1945.

Aldrovandi (Ulisse) Quadrupedum omniu[m] Bisulcoru[m] Historia, second edition, engraved title, woodcut illustrations, scattered spotting, ex-Bologna with occasional ink-stamps, previous owner's small ink signature to front free endpaper, contemporary vellum, yapped edges, title in manuscript to spine, rubbed, remnants of small paper label to lower cover, [Nissen ZBI 76; Graesse I, 65], folio, Gian Battista Ferroni for Marco Antonia Bernia, 1641. *** Second edition of a ground-breaking investigation into hoofed (ungulate) quadrupeds, first published in 1621. Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) is regarded as the father of modern natural history due to his pivotal contribution to zoology, botany and geology. An erudite scholar of wide-ranging interests, he was the first professor of natural science at Bologna University. There, he established a renowned botanical garden and gathered a steady amount of specimens and detailed drawings of faunal and floral rarities in his private museum. Everything was later bequeathed to the City Senate. The majority of his extensive essays were published posthumously by his pupils with the support of the Bolognese Commune.

West Indies.- Sloane (Sir Hans) A Voyage to the Islands of Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica, with the Natural History..., 2 vol., first edition, titles in red and black, errata f., large folding engraved map, 284 engraved plates, double-page or folding and mounted on stubs, vol. 2 without 6B2 (seemingly blank), few minor tears to text margins or plate folds repaired, including very short tear to vol. 1 title lower margin, few corrections in ink manuscript and errata crossed through, occasional very light spotting or browning, some light marginal soiling, ex-library copies with bookplate, small ink-stamps to vol. 1 title and plates, 19th century half cloth, rebacked preserving original backstrips, library label to upper covers and small sticker to foot of spines, little rubbed, [Sabin 82169; Hunt 417], folio, B.M. for the Author, 1707-25. *** Sloane's most important published work, containing the first illustrations of the flora and fauna of Jamaica and the neighbouring islands. [Polidori (John)] The Vampyre; A Tale, first edition, third issue, lacking half-title, occasional light soiling, Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1819, bound with 2 others 19th century, together 3 works in 1 vol., book-label of J.O. Edwards and small binder's ticket to front pastedown, some light browning and damp-staining to second and third works, contemporary half calf, morocco spine label lettered "Vampyre" in gilt, quite worn in places, rubbed, 8vo. *** The circumstances surrounding the birth of this work, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, during a night of ghost-story telling with Byron and friends is well documented. This is the third issue, without Byron's name on the title, with the preliminaries reset to 23 lines and the word "almost" in the last line of p.36 missing the first letter. The two other works are Don Pedro, Kind of Castile by Lord Porchester (1828) and The Battle of Talavera, tenth edition (1816).
Economics.- Ricardo (David) On the Principles of Political Economy, and Taxation, first edition, p.41 little creased with tear into text repaired, few marginal pencil notes, occasional very light spotting, some light surface soiling and few small stains, ex-library copy with bookplate, shelfmark and ink-stamp to title, contemporary half calf, old reback, worn, covers detached, [Goldsmith 21734; Kress B7029; PMM 277], 8vo, John Murray, 1817. *** First edition of Ricardo's most important contribution to the science of political economy. His exact mathematical approach and deductive methods influenced succeeding generations of economists in the fields of currency, banking, and political thought. "Ricardo was, in a sense, the first 'scientific' economist" (PMM).
Sowerby (James de Carle) and Edward Lear. Tortoises, Terrapins, and Turtles, first edition, 60 fine lithograph plates, all but 3 hand-coloured and heightened with gum arabic, some foxing, mostly to text and to plate guards, gutta percha perished with all leaves loose, original morocco-backed cloth, spine lettered in gilt, a little rubbed, [Nissen ZBI 1701], folio, London, Paris, and Frankfurt, Henry Sotheran, Joseph Baer & Co., 1872.*** Lear originally prepared the plates from Sowerby's drawings for Bell's Monograph of the Testudinata, published in parts from 1836 to 1842 but with only 40 plates as the publication was never completed. Sotherans bought up the remaining stock of plates including 20 unpublished ones and issued them in this format with text by J.E.Gray of the British Museum.
McCarthy (Cormac) The Orchard Keeper, first English edition, signed presentation inscription from the author "To Peter & Pat, with very best wishes, Cormac McCarthy" on front free endpaper, the odd spot to margin, creasing to a few pages, original boards lettered in gilt, light bumping to spine ends, dust-jacket, creasing to edges and joints with surface wear on panels, vertical creases heavier to spine affecting lettering, spine ends frayed and chipped, nicks to edges, blue ink stain to lower flap joint with splitting, 8vo, 1966.
Grahame (Kenneth) The Wind in the Willows, first edition, half-title, frontispiece by Graham Robertson, foxing, mostly towards beginning and end, feint ink inscription to front free endpaper, original pictorial cloth, gilt, joints and edges a little rubbed, spine ends slightly frayed, uncut, 8vo, 1908.*** Overall a much better than usual copy of Grahame's classic tale of the riverbank, originally told as bedtime stories and then written in the form of letters to the author's son, Alistair, an unhappy boy who died tragically under a train while an undergraduate at Oxford in 1920.Provenance: Dame Freya Stark and her husband Stewart Perowne, with their Asolo bookplate .
Dahl (Roald) George's Marvellous Medicine, first edition, signed by author and dated '1981' one front free endpaper, illustrations by Quentin Blake, some very occasional light finger soiling to margins, original blue cloth, dustjacket, light fading to spine, light creasing to head and foot, otherwise excellent, 8vo, 1981.*** Among the most difficult Roald Dahl titles to find signed.
Stevenson (Robert Louis) Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, first edition, first issue, half-title, advertisement leaf at end, original wrappers printed in red and blue bound in at end (repaired at inner edge and upper cover with lower corner torn away), modern black morocco, gilt, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, g.e., [Prideaux 17a. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone], 8vo, 1886.*** The first issue of Stevenson's classic horror story, with the date on the upper wrapper altered in ink to '1886'.
