It was first published in 1598 and is variously attributed to Roger Carr, John Deacon and Robert Caudry.Provenance: J. Lowell (ink inscription); Arnold Muirhead (book-label).

An entertaining collection of esoteric facts and knowledge including the invention of printing by Guttenberg, the invention of guns, descriptions of a whale, an Indian tiger, an elephant, a crocodile and a unicorn and a reference to America on p. 372 as "an Iland round about environed with the great Ocean: but the length and bredth no man knoweth."

Unrecorded.- Gildas. The History of the Destruction of the Brittaines, [translated by Thomas Abington], title in double-rule border with woodcut ornament, woodcut initials and headpieces, title rather stained and soiled, scattered spotting and occasional staining, front free endpaper detached, 19th century diced calf, gilt, spine rubbed, [not in Wing], small 8vo, by T. Cotes, for William Cooke and are to be sold at his shop neere Furnivalls-Inne gate in Holborne, 1638.⁂ A seemingly unrecorded second edition of the previous lot. ESTC lists a 1652 edition of the same work under the title A Description of the State of Great Britain but nothing under this title. Both the first edition and 1652 editions call for a frontispiece portrait not present here.

Okes, for Matthew Walbancke, and are to be sold at his shop in Grayes-Inne-gate, 1639.⁂ One of the earliest acknowledgements of Shakespeare's preeminence. The 481 epigrams and epitaphs in the work honour the Shriieys, Sydney, Ben Jonson and Donne amongst others including 2 epigrams referencing Shakespeare's greatness. The second (no. 119) reads: "Thou hast so us'd thy pen (or shook they Speare) / That Poets startle, nor thy wit come near."Provenance: W. A. White (pencil inscription, dated 13 July 1892).

Beaumont (Francis) and John Fletcher. A King and No King. Acted at the Black-Fryars, by his Majesties Servants, fourth edition, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, some staining, soiling or discolouration, 20th century half calf, gilt, [Pforzheimer 48; STC 1673], small 4to, by E. G. for William Leake, and are to be sold at his shop in Chancery-lane, neere unto the Rowles, 1639.⁂ One of Beaumont and Fletcher's most popular plays, first performed in 1611 and published in 1619. Such was the play's popularity that its title became almost proverbial by the mid-century to refer to the political instability that typified that century.

Hodgkinson], 1639.⁂ Scarce anti-Presbyterian pamphlet described by Robert Baille as "one of the most venomous and bitter pamphlets against us all that could come from the hand of our most furious and enraged enemy."

Feminism.- Du Bosc (Jacques) The Compleat Woman, translated by N. ESTC calls for 3 folding tables in the Maunsell printing and only one in this one, but this would appear to be an error. William Abell (1584-1655) was a vintner and master of the Vintner's Company. "Alderman Abel and his brother-in-law Richard Kilvert made themselves very unpopular by seeking parliamentary authority for a 'Project' giving to the Vintners' Company fresh powers of control over the retail sale of wine." - Simon.

Cavendish (George) The Negotiations of Thomas Woolsey, The great Cardinall of England, Containing his life and Death, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece, woodcut initials and headpieces, occasional scattered spotting, bookplate to pastedown, speckled calf, gilt, by B. M. Pickering, upper joint cracked but holding firm, extremities rubbed, g.e., small 4to, for William Sheeres, 1641.⁂ First edition of Cavendish's much-reprinted biography of Wolsey. New England religion.- Cotton (John) The Churches Resurrection, or the Opening of the Fift and sixt verses of the 20th Chap. of the Revelation. By that Learned and Reverend, Iohn Cotton Teacher to the Church of Boston in New England, first edition, title within typograhic border, woodcut initial and headpiece, with final blank f., small marginal repairs to title and A2, occasional light marginal foxing, bookplate to pastedown, 20th century boards, [Sabin 17054; Wing C6419], small 4to, by R. O. & G. D. for Henry Overton, and are to be sold at his shop in Popes-head-Alley, 1642.⁂ Scarce pamphlet by Cotton (1585-1652), minister and so-called "Patriarch of New England". Cotton here compares religion in New England with that practiced in Europe, attacking the Catholic Church in particular, equating it to the seven-headed beast in the book of Revelation.Provenance: Fairfax of Cameron (armorial bookplate).

Number of the Beast.- Potter (Francis) An Interpretation of Number 666, first edition, engraved pictorial title by W. Marshall, 1 full-page engraved illustration, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut numerological illustrations, title with neat repairs to inner margins, S4 with small rust-hole touching text, stab-holes to inner margins, some very light foxing or finger-soiling, but a clean and well-margined copy generally, biography of the author supplied in an early hand on endpaper, bookplate to pasedown, later vellum-backed cloth, [Madan II, 1032; Wing P3028], small 4to, Oxford, by Leonard Lichfield, 1642.⁂ A theory on the Number of the Beast by this English clergyman, scientitific instrument maker, early member of the Royal Society and friend of John Aubrey. Potter had connected the number 25 (the approximate square root of 66) with Catholic institutions. The book contains a preface by the emminent biblical scholar Joseph Mede, who described Potter's "discovery" as 'the happiest that ever yet came into the world'.Provenance: J. A. Law.- Staunford (Sir William) An exposition of the Kinges prerogatiue, collected out of the great Abridgement of Iustice Fitzherbert, and other olde writers of the lawes of England, fourth edition, mosty black letter, woodcut initials, occasional ink notes to margins in contemporary and later hands, occasional dampstaining to lower margin, faint ink stamp to title, later half calf, rebacked, rubbed, [STC 23216], small 4to, in Fleete-streate within Temple barre at the signe of the Hand and Starre, by Richard Tottel, 1577⁂ The first work in English on statutory interpretation with sections of women, marriage, idiots and madmen.

T[aylor] (J[ohn]) An Apology for Private Preaching. In which those Formes are warranted, or rather justified, which the malignant Sect contemne, and daily by prophane Pamphlets make ridiculous, first edition, woodcut initial and typographic headpiece, title shaved at head touching first word, bookplate to pastedown, 20th century crushed blue morocco, g.e., [Wing T430], small 4to, n.p. 1642.⁂ First edition of John "The Water Poet" Taylor's scarce anti-Puritan satire. Shakespeare (William).- [Breton (Nicholas)] England's Selected Characters, Describing the Good and Bad Worthies of this Age, first edition, title within typographic border, light soiling to title, a few ff. lightly frayed at fore-margin, stitchmarks at inner margins occasionally touching text, attractive red crushed morocco, gilt, by Elizabeth Greenhill, [Wing B4384], small 4to, for T. S., 1643.⁂ Scarce first addition of this abridgement of Breton's The Good and the Badde (1616). With an early reference to Shakespeare's Richard III in the description of a character of An Unworthy Lawyer.

Angling poem.- L[luelyn] (M[artin]) Men-Miracles. With other Poems, first edition, title within double-rule border with woodcut ornament, woodcut intials, head- and tail-pieces, closely trimmed at head, occasionally touching headlines, a very good, clean copy, bookplate to pastedown, 20th century calf, morocco labels to spine, spine a little rubbed, g.e., [Keynes p.227; Wing L2625], small 8vo, [Oxford, by H. Hall], 1646.⁂ A rare collection of poems by the (likely) Welsh poet and Royalist Lluelyn. Includes his "Song against Fishing" with the chorus: "Break thy Rod about thy Noddle/ Through thy wormes and flies by the Pottle." We can trace only 1 copy at auction in the last 70 years. Medicine.- Cooke (James) Mellificium chirurgiae. Or the Marrow of Many Good Authours. Wherein in Briefly and Faithfully Handled the Art of Chyrurgery, in its Foure Parts... and Lastly, an Addition of Severall Magnistrall Receipts, first edition, title and text within double- and single-rule borders, woodcut initials and headpieces, with an initial imprimatur f., B6 a little chipped at head, ink ownership inscriptions to title and endpapers, contemporary sheep, joints splitting at head, [Krivatsy 2706; Wellcome II, p.386; Wing C6012], 12mo, for Samuel Cartwright, at the sign of the Hand and Bible in Duck-Lane, 1648.⁂ First edition of this work that proved very popular, running through nine editions by 1717. C[orbet] (R[ichard]) Poëtica Stromata or a Collection of Sundry Peices in Poetry, second edition, with final contents f., light worming to first 3 gatherings with occasional loss to 1 or 2 letters of test, I1 with small hole to lower margin caused by printing error with loss to signature, light foxing and soiling, occasional corrections or marginal notes in a contemporary hand, attractive modern antique-style black morocco, gilt, [Wing C6272], small 8vo, n.p. [France or Holland], 1648.⁂ First edition under this title, originally published as Certain Elegant Poems in 1647, and with several poems added. It was published posthumously and probably printed on the Continent. Above the poem "An Exhortation" an early hand has inscribed "This is none of Dr. Corbets" with the poem signed "J. Harris" at foot.

Naval and maritime.- Boroughs (Sir John) The Soveraignty of the British Seas. Proved by Records, History, and the Municipall Lawes of this Kingdome, first edition, title and text within rule borders, woodcut initials and headpieces, ink stamp to title verso, 20th century calf, gilt, [Goldsmiths' 1192; Wing B6129], 12mo, for Humphrey Moseley, and are to be sold at his shop at the Princes Armes in St Pauls Church yard, 1651.⁂ A scarce and important work; Boroughs was appointed keeper of the Tower of London records in 1623, and used his extraordinary access to the documents and records to compile the present volume.

Plutarch. Aenigmaticall types of the future state and condition of England for many years to come, first edition, woodcut initials, 19 full-page woodcut illustrations, 2 diagrams in text, 3 woodcuts repaired at margins, browning and occasional light soiling, D4 corner defective with loss to page number, 20th century calf, [Wing L2228], small 4to, for Humfrey Blunden, at the sign of the Castle in Corn-hill, 1651.⁂ Famous collection of prophesies by Lilly (1602-1681), the astrologer and almanac publisher. Two of the woodcuts (likely executed by the author) brought particular notoriety as they appeared to predict both the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London, two events that would not occur until 14 and 15 years respectively after the publication of this work.

Eating black pudding.- [Barlow (Thomas)] The Triall of a Black-Pudding. Or, the Unlawfulness of Eating Blood proved by Scriptures, first edition, the Huth-Fairfax copy, title within typographic border with typographic ornament, woodcut initial and headpiece, light surface soiling to title, some margins a little darkened, 20th century calf, gilt, spine faded, [Wing B846], small 4to, by F:N. and are to be sold by John Hancock in Popes Head Alley, 1652.⁂ First edition of this rare and eccentric tract debating the eating of black pudding on theological grounds.
