A Clarice Cliff and Frank Brangwyn limited edition 'Brangwyn' wall charger, circa 1935, painted with a processional scene of figures and animals to an exotic foliate setting, diameter 43cm, painted signature 'Frank Brangwyn' to reverse and the wording 'The Brangwyn panels designed for the Royal Gallery of the House of Lords 1925, first exhibited at Olympia 1933, painted by Clarice Cliff from one of the panels, A.Wilkinson, Royal Staffordshire Pottery, Burslem, Staffordshire, seemingly unfinished and not numbered, restored. NB - This lot was made by Clarice Cliff in 1934-39 and depict life in Imperial India. The plaques are hand-enamelled with scenes from 'The British Empire Panels' designed by Frank Brangwyn. The Brangwyn panels were commissioned by Lord Iveagh for the House of Lords to commemorate deceased peers, though the designs were rejected by the House of Lords as too frivolously decorative. The panels are now on display at Swansea Civic Centre. Clarice Cliff adapted designs from three of Brangwyn's panels for these limited edition wall plaques.

IT IS BELIEVED THIS PARTICULAR BIBLE BELONGED TO DAUGHTER OF SIR WILLIAM POLE - ELIZABETH POLE BORN ON AUGUST 25, 1588 EAST DEVON, ENGLAND. ELZABETH SAILED FROM PLYMOUTH ENGLAND IN 1633 ON THE SPEEDWELL WITH TWO FRIENDS, FOURTEEN SERVANTS, GOODS AND TWENTY TONNES OF SALT FOR FISHING PROVISION. SHE INTENDED TO FROM A SETTLEMENT AND FOR THE CONVERSION OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS TO CHRISTIANITY. ALTHOUGH THE TAUNTON TOWN SEAL DEPICTS POLE PURCHASING LAND FROM THE LOCAL WAMPANOAG INDIANS, SHE WAS NOT ACTUALLY INVOLVED IN THE ORIGINAL TRANSACTION. HOWEVER, TOGETHER WITH HER BROTHER WILLIAM, SHE ACQUIRED A LARGE SECTION OF THIS LAND IN 1637. THIS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TAUNTON SETTLEMENT IN 1638. THE NEXT YEAR, ON 3 MARCH 1639, THE SETTLEMENT WAS OFFICIALLY INCORPORATED.
