Systema Brahmanicum liturgicum mythologicum civile ex monumentis indicis Musei Borgiani velitris..., first edition, engraved title vignette of Ganesh, 30 sheets of engravings, of which 1 double-page, later ink and pencil marginalia, some plates stained, occasional spotting and staining elsewhere, contemporary mottled calf, broken, spine worn, 4to, Rome, Antonio Fulgoni, 1791. sold not subject to return. ⁂ Scarce account of the Indian art in the Museo Borbonico of Naples by an Austrian Carmelite priest who was a missionary on the Malabar coast from 1776-1789. The work introduced Europe to the Hindu Pantheon.

Annotated by a bluestocking.- [Swift (Jonathan)] Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World... by Captain Lemuel Gulliver, 4 parts in 2 vol., first edition, Teerink's 'B' edition, engraved frontispiece in second state with vertical chain-lines (small hole to inner margin), 6 engraved plates, titles within double-rule borders, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, occasional light marginal worming, light foxing and occasional browning, ink ownership inscription to title and over 20 marginal annotations in the same hand, 1 or 2 annotations shaved, early 19th century tree calf, vol.1 upper joint split and upper cover becoming loose, spine ends chipped, light rubbing to extremities, [Teerink 291(B); Rothschild 2108], 8vo, for Benj. Motte, 1726.⁂ An attractive copy of Swift's most famous work with annotations by a blue stocking. The volumes are inscribed by Elizabeth Smith, dated June 7th 1806, possibly Elizabeth Smith (1776 - August 1806), the translator, linguist, Biblical and Oriental scholar. Whether this particular Elizabeth Smith or not, the annotator is clearly exceptionally well-read and makes reference to Plato's Republic, Homer, Virgil, the Book of Job, More's Utopia, Pope's Dunciad, Whiston's New Theory of the Earth, Isaac Newton, Edmund Halley and the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. She also identifies some contemporary references and is generally effusive in her praise of the work.

Kelmscott Press.- [Gulielmus, Archbishop of Tyre.] The History of Godefrey of Boloyne and of the Conquest of Iherusalem, from William Caxton's edition of 1481, edited by H.Halliday Sparling, one of 300 copies on Flower paper, printed in red and black with text in Troy type and glossary in Chaucer, wood-engraved title, borders and initials designed by William Morris, very occasional spotting, faint ink library stamp to head of title and number to front free endpaper, original limp vellum with silk ties (ties lacking), yapp edges, spine titled in gilt, uncut, a little rubbed and rather soiled, especially spine, a few creases, [Peterson A15], 4to, Kelmscott Press, 1893.⁂ One of Caxton's most important works, according to Morris, and with many ornaments including the first use of the larger Kelmscott printer's mark. It was also the first book to be sold by the press itself and not through a publisher.A printed presentation label to front pastedown reads: "Given by Mrs William Morris in memory of her husband 1897."

ESTC notes another edition with errata on the recto of final leaf Z8, here blank. Hooper (c.1495-1555), Bishop of Gloucester, and Worcester, was a protestant reformer and martyr, burnt at the stake in Gloucester (illustrated in Foxe's Book of Martyrs) after Edward VI's church legislation had been repealed once Mary had become Queen.

The architects Robert Adam, John Gwynn and William Kent are all listed as subscribers.Provenance: George Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu, from 1732-66 known as the Earl of Cardigan; his daughter Lady Elizabeth Montagu, who married Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch.

Italy.- Zocchi (Giuseppe) Vedute delle Ville, e d'altri Luoghi della Toscana, third (second Bouchard) edition, engraved pictorial title and 50 plates by Benedetti, Berardi, Carboni, Corsi, Duflos, Filosi, Franceschini, Giampiccoli, Marieschi, Mogalli, Monaco, Morghen, Muller, Parr, Piranesi, Seuter and Wagner after Zocchi, title repaired to verso but also at foot of recto just encroaching on plate-mark, traces of damp but washed generally clean, light brown stain vertically across centre of all plates, modern half calf over marbled boards, oblong folio, Florence, Giuseppe Bouchard, 1757.⁂ Good copy of this magnificent work on the villas and country houses of Tuscany, with many also showing the gardens and surrounding countryside. The work was first published in 1744 and Bouchard's first edition in 1754 with this edition appearing three years later.

Bloxham, old limp vellum with foot of spine repaired and new endpapers, [STC 17296], by Henry Denham, 1567.⁂ Genuinely rare book with only one auction record over the last 50 years and 11 copies located in ESTC (3 only in USA). By way of comparison, the Britwell Court copy, sold in 1925, made £155, while their copy of the Shakespeare fourth folio made £165 in 1919. The heading of book one summarises the content thus: "A pleasant Discourse with the chiefe kindes particularly of Precious Stones, Plants, Beastes, & Foules, after the order of the Alphabet, never heretofore in Print."

The first work is signed on the title by John Gordon, Viscount Kenmure (1750-1840), the direct descendant of William Gordon, 6th Viscount of Kenmure (1672-1716) who took part in the uprising and whose execution is mentioned on p.377. His title and estates were forfeited until repealed by an 1824 act of Parliament that reinstated them to John Gordon.

He first visited Chamonix in 1760 and established a prize for the first ascent of Mont Blanc, which was achieved in 1786. Saussure reached the summit himself the following year and published Relation abregée d'un Voyage a la Cime du Mont-Blanc, the first published account of the ascent of the mountain. The present work was his magnum opus and two further volumes appeared in 1796.
