Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). Three etchings. Two plates from the c. 1761 Rome edition of Della Magnificenza e d'Architettura de' Romani. The first depicts various capitals and bas-reliefs; the second depicts column bases compared with illustrations from Julien-David Le Roy (1724-1803). Both of these plates have double circle fleur de lis watermarks. The third plate is the dedication page from Antichita d'Albano e di Castel Gandolfo, with a dedication to Pope Clement XIII. A Second World War SAS group, that of Douglas Arnold, one of the first volunteers to join the Special Air Service, the group includes Arnold's campaign medals in issue carton, identity discs, Liverpool Scottish glengarry, maroon beret and SAS beret, three silk escape maps (Zones of France second edition, and two of 43A/B France, Belgium, Holland, Spain), and written letter on SAS RHQ headed paper thanking Douglas for the loan of the beret for use a pattern for future official Ordnance production of such. Americas.- Gordon (Rev. James Bentley) An Historical and Geographical Memoir of the North-American Continent: its Nations and Tribes, first edition, stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece, errata slip, very light marginal damp-staining to a few leaves but still a good copy with wide margins, modern leather-backed boards, uncut and partly unopened, [Sabin 27979], 4to, Dublin, John Jones, 1820.⁂ Scarce work published posthumously for the benefit of the author's orphan daughters; it contains chapters on Mexico, New Mexico & California, Northwestern America, Greenland & Spitzbergen, Canada, Virginia, and the Bahamas. Only 2 copies listed on COPAC (BL and King's College London); no copy at auction since 1977.
Alchemy and distillation.- Barlet (Annibal) Le Vray et Methodique Cours de la Physique Resolutive Vulgairement dite Chymie... Pour Connoistre le Theotechnie Ergocosmique, c'est à dire, l'art de Dieu, en l'ouvrage de l'universe, first edition, woodcut frontispiece, 36 woodcuts in the text (one double-page) and 2 double-page tables (one of chemical symbols), woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, ink stain to upper corner, largely restricted to extreme margins and first half of book, C,D and 2V-3C with worming, occasionally affecting letters with a few words supplied in manuscript facsimile,D3 woodcut torn and repaired, frontispiece lower margins backed and repaired with some loss (not affecting image), occasional spotting or browning, upper hinge tender, contemporary vellum, darkened and soiled, lower cover repaired, later endpapers, [cf. Duveen 44; Ferguson I, 72&73; Caillet I, 730], 4to, Paris, N. Charles, 1653.⁂ This richly illustrated work was intended to accompany lectures which Barlet gave in his laboratory at Paris, attended by John Evelyn in 1649.
