Ottoline was quickly instrumental in arranging a meeting between him and D. H. Lawrence. Huxley was to become one of the conscientious objectors who became semi-permanent residents at Garsington during the summer of 1916. Ottoline was to be upset by the descriptions of her life and friends at Garsington in Huxley's novel "Crome Yellow", 1921, as he had become almost an adopted son of the house, but, typically, she had no wish to make an enemy of her old friend and passed the blame on to Maria Nys, who she persuaded herself had encouraged Huxley's lampooning of Garsington out of a feeling of resentment. Ottoline resumed her friendship with Huxley in 1927. On her death, Huxley told Philip in his letter of condolence that "she gave me a complete mental reorientation". (1)
