FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN of this highly important work on conditioned reflexes and automatic responses in dogs which had consequences not only for medicine but for political thought, sociology and psychology, and led to the "behaviourist" view that much human behaviour can be understood as a series of conditioned reflexes. This edition was the first printed in any western language and was published some four years before the first English edition; the first (Russian) edition of 1897, printed in Cyrillic, is excessively rare. "Mouth-watering is a familiar experience and may be induced without the sight or smell of food. The sounds of a table being laid for lunch in another room may induce salivation in man, and the rattle of a dish in which its food is usually served will cause similar reaction in a dog. By detailed analysis of such facts as these Pavlov made great contributions to our knowledge of the physiology of digestion in a series of lectures delivered in St Petersburg and published in the following year. The elaboration of these experiment and their extension to children demonstrated how great a proportion of human behaviour is explicable as a series of conditioned reflexes. Pavlov's results are, indeed, clearly complementary to those of Freud and many regard them as of more fundamental significance. Like Freud's, this was the work of one man and a completely new departure. Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905" (PMM). The model was delivered by April 1922 and Pfeiffer intended the work to be the first of a limited edition by leading contemporary artists for a projected 'Society of Friends of Ceramic Art.' Neither Barlach nor his dealer, Paul Cassirer, were in favour, however, and the idea unfortunately foundered (C. A RARE COPY OF SWINBURNE POEMS ILLUSTRATED BY HARRY CLARKESelected Poems of Algernon Charles Swinburne, with Illustrations and Decorations by Harry Clarke and an Introduction by Humbert Wolfe. Page 52 has an illustration intended for reproduction but not reproduced in any copy other than this and my own copy. March 7 1929" With 12 photogravure plates (11 titled and listed in contents)Clarke's note is referring to an illustration which accompanies the poem Aholibah. This was omitted from other editions as judged to be too erotic. In his introduction Humbert Wolfe deliberately disassociates himself from Clarke's visual interpretation of Swinburne's work.

Victoria Cross, an official Hancocks & Co, London, replica, the reverse engraved ‘Hancocks 90’, in fitted leather case of issue, extremely fine £300-£400 --- The Victoria Cross was instituted on 29 January 1856, with the first awards backdated to 1854, and in the first 150 years of its existence was awarded on 1,355 occasions (1,352 Crosses and 3 Second Award Bars). To mark the 150th Anniversary, the London jewellers Hancocks, who have manufactured every Victoria Cross ever awarded, issued a limited edition replica, the replicas all individually numbered on the reverse, with the edition limited to 1,352 replica crosses. Sold together with Hancocks Numbered Certificate of authenticity.
