R. Morehead inside upper cover, Wolff 6280 (lacking half-titles and advertisement leaves, spotted throughout, binding defective). A contemporary review copy of the first edition of Shelley's Gothic masterpiece. Written when she was only 18, it displays a vast wealth of knowledge over a wide range of subjects such as politics, science, literature, history and mythology, and was intended as a warning of the dangers of the Industrial Revolution and modern technology. This copy is from the library of Rev Robert Morehead (1774 -1842), Dean of Edinburgh, and from 1817 to 1826 joint editor of the new Edinburgh Magazine, a new series of The Scots Magazine, for which he reviewed Frankenstein in March 1818 (The Edinburgh Magazine and Literary Miscellany: a New Series of the `The Scots Magazine' 2 (March 1818), 249-253). He was ultimately critical of Shelley's flaunting of the the established order of nature as it appears, both in the world of matter and of mind, and in his review of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which appeared two months later in The Scots Magazine, he contrasted Austen favourably with Shelley for her concentration on the ordinariness and verisimilitude of her characters. Morehead counted among his correspondents both Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott, who himself reviewed Frankenstein for the rival literary publication Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. See illustration.
