First edition, including the famous view on New Amsterdam/New York on p. 124 ("(…) the handsomest, and at the same time the most agreeable view of Dutch New York", Asher, p. 23). Borba de Moraes, 586: "It is incontestably a beautiful book, profusely illustrated, which has become quite scarce in the few last years." Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731), surgeon and anatomist, professor at Leiden and Amsterdam, was the first to demonstrate the occurrence of blood vessels in almost all tissues of the human body, made many important anatomical investigations including those of the valves in the lympathics, the bronchial arteries, and the vascular plexuses of the heart, and he was the first also to point out the nourishment of the foetus through the umbilical cord. - Hirsch-H. NOTE:First and only Dutch translation of the "Fasciculus" by the Cologne Carthusian Rolevinck (c. 1425-1502), one of the most important world chronicles of the 15th century. The first Latin edition appeared in Cologne in 1474. This version was adapted to the Low Countries and contains textual additions relating to the history of the dioceses of Utrecht, Brabant, Holland and Zeeland and was also augmented with an extensive Chronicle of the Kings of France and England. The work is illustrated with numerous woodcuts, from the blocks used in Veldener's 1475 Louvain editions, but with the addition of 12 new ones, and of a set of coat of arms used only in the supplementary chronicles. Dentistry.- Berdmore (Thomas) A Treatise on the Disorders and Deformities of the Teeth and Gums, third edition, title and first few leaves a little creased at lower margin, some light spotting, modern half calf, spine slightly rubbed, [Wellcome II, 146], 8vo, for the Author, 1770.⁂ The earliest English text-book of dentistry, first published in 1768 with a Dublin edition the following year. Berdmore (1740-85) was dentist to George III and one of the most eminent and successful exponents of dentistry in England. He was the first to employ the use of the microscope in the study of teeth and conducted experiments into the action of acids on the teeth. All early editions are scarce.
