In his letter to the former owner A.H. Spencer written in the year of publication Cape records that "when printing the illustrations in colour for the limited (five guinea) edition of seven pillars, we printed rather more than we actually required for the 750 copies. This enabled us to select the very best prints to include in the volumes. Going through those which are surplus I have been able to make up a certain number of sets which are I think, as good, or nearly as good, as the coloured prints in the five guinea edition. I have bound up one or two copies of the ordinary edition and included these coloured plates and also two facsimiles. These one or two copies, which are not for sale, we propose to present to friends who have shown exceptional interest in the book and its fortunes. It is a great pleasure to send you a copy, which I think you will be glad to have as a souvenir of a great bookselling and publishing collection..."
