Charles Alfred Stothard (1786-1821 Ad). was a draughtsman who specialised in in antiquarian subjects; appointed historical draughtsman to the Society of Antiquaries in 1811, he was sent to France to prepare drawings of the Bayeaux Tapestry for publication in Vetusta Monumenta and then for three visits to France (1816-1819); previously he had made drawings for Daniel Lysons' Magna Britannica and had commenced his own work The Monumental Effigies of Great Britain, the first part published 1811; this work covers the period of his second French tour in thirty-two letters and includes a plate showing the part of the Bayeaux Tapestry where Harold takes the oath before William.
