Beatrix Potter frequently visited family members, this being the last of her works to be published a month before her marriage to William Heelis (1872-1945) a solicitor from Hawkshead, on 15 October, 1915.  Provenance: by descent from the family of Beatrix Potter. 'Beatrix gave first editions of many of her books to her goddaughter Helen Burton and her uncle Fred Burton. This book was given to Uncle Fred in 1913 (the year of his death) whilst he was living at Gwaynynog, Denbighshire, Wales. Pigling Bland then passed down to Uncle Fred's granddaughter, Esme Marcella Burton who wrote her name in it. During the 2nd world war Esme drove lorries around Britain for the Womens Auxiliary Army, where in 1943 she met William J Benham and they settled down together at the end of the war. Esme left the book at Gwaynynog and her sister Helen Burton added it to her collection of Beatrix's Tales for safe keeping. Helen died some years ago and her daughter Marion gave this copy to the current owner who shares the family friendship'. Ɵ STERN, Philip Van Doren. (1900 - 1984). The Greatest Gift: A Christmas Tale, [It's A Wonderful Life]. Presentation copy, INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the Author. Privately printed, Christmas, 1943. a single 21pp. pamphlet, first edition, first printing, Limited edition of 200 copies privately printed by the author for distribution to his friends, 8vo, (195 x 136mm) original orange stapled paper wrappers, printed titled label to front, INSCRIBED by the author in black ink to title page, 'Christmas Greetings from Lilian and Phil Stern' and further SIGNED by the author on the last leaf, 'Philip Van Doren Stern'. A scarce edition and the basis for the 1946 classic Christmas film 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Philip Van Doren Stern began writing the story in 1939 and finally showed it to his literary agent in April 1943, his agent liked it but publishers were just not interested. Stern sent two copies to the Library of Congress with a copyright registration form, signed most of the others and sent them to his friends as Christmas cards in 1943. Stern's agent, one of the lucky recipients, asked if she could offer the story to Hollywood filmmakers, Stern thought that was a crazy idea, but he agreed. The film rights were sold for $10,000 to RKO Radio Pictures in 1944 who in turn sold the film rights to Frank Capra's newly-formed film production company, Liberty Films. Capra sent a copy of the script to his long time collaborator, actor Jimmy Stewart, who enthusiastically agreed to play the lead character. Jane Austen's fourth novel and the last to be published during her lifetime, volume I bears a dedication to the Prince Regent who was an admirer of Austen's works and invited her to dedicate the book to him after her visit to Carlton House in November, 1815. Provenance: by descent from the family of William Herrick Macaulay (1853-1936).W.H. Macaulay, was a British Mathematician, Fellow and Vice-Provost of King's College, Cambridge, his relatives included John Macaulay, Thomas Babington Macaulay and Lady Trevelyan. Paton.  Provenance: Howard Nixon, a librarian and historian of bookbinding, offers a brief history of bookbinders, Ramage of London, and stated this copy, bound in the special publisher's binding with the text of Aytoun's poems, appeared in a very similar binding held in the Museum's collection.  (Qty. 1). Lord Albert Seymour was the son of Sir Francis George Hugh Seymour, 5th Marquess of Hertford and Lady Emily Murray of Mansfield(1816-1902). He travelled overland with Liston's entourage, which included Gaetano Mercati who became Liston's draughtsman. Count Pietro Gamba (1801 - 1827) became acquainted with Lord Byron (1788-1824) through his sister, Countess Teresa Guiccioli, one of Byron's many mistresses on the continent. Gamba became a close companion and accompanied Byron as secretary and second in command on his second expedition to Greece.
