A scarce edition and the basis for the 1946 classic Christmas film 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Philip Van Doren Stern began writing the story in 1939 and finally showed it to his literary agent in April 1943, his agent liked it but publishers were just not interested. Stern sent two copies to the Library of Congress with a copyright registration form, signed most of the others and sent them to his friends as Christmas cards in 1943. Stern's agent, one of the lucky recipients, asked if she could offer the story to Hollywood filmmakers, Stern thought that was a crazy idea, but he agreed. The film rights were sold for $10,000 to RKO Radio Pictures in 1944 who in turn sold the film rights to Frank Capra's newly-formed film production company, Liberty Films. Capra sent a copy of the script to his long time collaborator, actor Jimmy Stewart, who enthusiastically agreed to play the lead character. The names, personalities and roles for some characters in the film were changed, George Pratt, (renamed George Bailey) the stranger (re-imagined as an angel named Clarence Odbody) George's wife (renamed Mary Hatch) and Mr. Potter owned a photography studio in the story, but was a conniving banker in the film).(Qty. 1).   Condition Report: light marks and some darkening to paper wrappers, upper cover detached and chipped (with loss) to lower corner, toning to leaf edges, internally a clean crisp copy with bold clear inscription and signatures.Condition Report Disclaimer
