John Minihan (b. 1946) Photograph - Lady Diana Spencer, Pimlico, London 1980. Limited edition photograph, signed, titled and dated in the lower margin. John Minihan was born in Dublin and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. This remarkable and iconic photograph of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery where she worked. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales`s love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first. Minihan is known for his iconic photographs of Samuel Beckett and Francis Bacon as well as documenting the lives of ordinary people in his native Athy. The present example was shot in 1980 and shows a 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer with the sun to her back in the garden of the nursery where she worked. Minihan, who was working in the media in London at the time, was the first photographer to capture the future Princess in film following the announcement she was the fiancee of the Prince of Wales.
