Le Carré (John) The Honourable Schoolboy first edition signed & inscribed by the author (as John Le Carré) on half-title ex-library markings including stamps and sticker marks on half-title (around inscription) original inner falps laminated onto verso of front free endpaper original boards with dust-jacket partly taped down onto covers some edge wear with loss 8vo 1977. ***A far more interesting than average ex-library copy this copy was deaccessioned from the MI6 library. The inscription is an interestingly cryptic one: "To Alan in memory of mutual friends - John le Carré 6 Nov `96". We are reliably informed that one of the mutual friends referred to in the inscription was the now deceased officer on whom the Honourable Schoolboy character was based and who at one time served under the vendor in Hong Kong where the novel is set. A fascinating copy of a key work in the spy canon..

First mentioned inscribed: "John Clark Land Surveyor" but it is unclear as to whether Clark wrote this item or this is merely his ownership inscription. Perhaps John Clark (d. 1807) scholar of Scottish Gaelic literature and land agent (though the inscription makes a distinction as a surveyor) but Clark was certainly known as a writer of poetry and although most of his professional life was spent in Wales was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland..
