Macaronic Poetry.- [Folengo (Teofilo)] [Opus Merlini Cocaii], collation: A-Z, AA-MM8, lacking signatures A, M, MM (?index) and Ll4 & 5, with 52 full-page woodcuts only (of 54), browned and stained, wormed with some loss, trimmed shaving some side-notes, a few leaves loose, contemporary ink inscription below colophon (crossed out) and another to verso, later bookplate of Robert Weiss, 17th century sprinkled calf, spine gilt, rather worn, spine defective, [Adams F687; EDIT 16 CNCE 19359], small 8vo (121 x 79mm.),Toscolano, Alessandro Paganino, 1521; sold not subject to return⁂ First collected edition and the first edition to include this series of woodcuts. Folengo was the leading practitioner of macaronic poetry (the blending of the vernacular with Latin, often in burlesque writings), and here we find his master-piece Baldus. This tale was the inspiration for Rabelais' Panurge and Gargantua. It includes the merciless satirising of the clergy and a number of highly memorable scenes, such as the battle of the flying ants.

Cadell, 1790, together 2 works in 1 vol., occasional spotting or foxing, second work with browning to corners of final few ff., autograph notes by Kearney to front free endpaper "the spirit & vigour of his pursuit always gives delight; & the reader follows him, without reluctance, thro' his mazes, in themselves flowery & pleasing, & ending at the point originally in view", bookplate of Kearney and library label with shelf marks to pastedown, contemporary half calf, spine ruled in gilt with red morocco label, joints cracked but holding firm, a little rubbed, preserved in brown morocco pull-top box lettered in gilt (extremities a little rubbed), 8vo. ⁂ Presentation copy of Burke's masterpiece, one of the most influential works in modern English history. Michael Kearney (1733-1814), fellow at Trinity College Dublin, met Burke upon the author's return to Dublin in 1761.

"There was an Old woman named Towl; Who went out to Sea with her Owl: But the Owl was Sea-Sick; And scream's for Physic; Which sadly annoy'd Mistress Towl."

Mechanical Devices.- Grollier de Serviere (Gaspard) Recueil d'Ouvrages Curieux de Mathematique et de Mecanique, ou Description du Cabinet..., first edition, title in red and black with woodcut device, dedication with engraved coat-of-arms and initial, woodcut ornaments and initials, 85 engraved plates numbered to LXXXVIII (plates XXXIX, XLVIII & LXXVI not issued), errata leaf at end, title a little soiled and water-stained at inner margin, marginal tear to dedication, a few plates lightly browned, engraved bookplate of Bryan Faussett, contemporary calf, worn, rebacked preserving part of gilt spine, [Berlin Kat. 1784], 4to, Lyons, David Forey, 1719.⁂ A description of the collection of mechanical instruments formed, and predominantly made, by the author's grandfather, Nicolas Grollier de Serviere (1593-1686). He was a mirror-maker and descendant of Jean Grolier the bibliophile. The collection included clocks, bridges, locks, water-raising devices, mills, military engines, a revolving bookcase, wheelchair etc.

The work is set on the 19th century Essex coast, with its marshes, smugglers, wildfowlers and local characters. Swinburne compared it to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights.

James' last collection, and one of his bleakest, rare in the macabre dust-jacket. We can trace no other copy at auction in the last 30 years.
