Berrettini (Pietro) Tabulae Anatomicae first edition title in red and black with engraved vignette woodcut decorations and initials 27 engraved plates by Luca Ciamberlano some spotting and soiling mostly to margins light water-stain to lower edge contemporary French mottled calf spine gilt in compartments with raised bands a little rubbed but overall a very good copy [Garrison-Morton 395.2; Heirs of Hippocrates 470] folio Rome Antonius de Rubeis for Faustus Amideus 1741. ***Superb engravings by this enormously important and infuential Italian artist who according to the World Encyclopaedia of Art “...among Italian painters [Berrettini] must be considered the most influential personality of his generation...” Twenty of the anatomical studies (plates I -XIX males and XXVII female) were originally drawn by Berrettini in about 1618 and depict their subjects in a variety of dramatic poses amongst columns plinths and arches derived from classical architecture. The remaining 7 plates show figures copied from Vesalius Vesling Casserio and others along with commentary supplied by Petrioli who published the work in 1741. Petrioli also had the plates embellished with numerous smaller anatomical figures taken from Vesalius Valverde and others “engraved in an incongruous manner wherever there was sufficient space on the plate” (Roberts &Tomlinson). It is these embellishments which were removed from the plates of the 1788 edition (see following lot)..

This work recounts his tour in America where he once dined with James Madison in Philadelphia and also visited the Washingtons at Mount Vernon..

Another signature of Ralph Carr of Adelphi Terrace and signature of John Morris both on title. “The first printed account of man`s entry into the region South of Antarctic Circle with rare additional chart facing p.1” (Spence). “This rare account of Cook`s second voyage was published surreptitiously eighteen months before Cook`s official narrative. It records many incidents omitted by Cook and gives the reasons which caused Sir Joseph Banks and his twelve assistants to withdraw from the expedition at the last moment. Marra was a gunner`s mate on the Resolution. He was an Irishman whom Cook had picked up in Batavia during the first voyage. Marra made an unsuccessful attempt to desert at Tahiti on May 14 1774. Marra probably supplied material from his private journal which was put into shape by some literary person in the pay of the publisher Newbery” (Hill). .

Peter and Wendy first edition frontispiece pictorial title and 11 plates by F.D.Bedford minor spotting to endpapers preliminaries and page extremties 1 f. torn at lower fore-corner but otherwise internally very good original green gilt-pictorial cloth very slight rubbing to corner tips but overall an unusually fine copy original dust-jacket gilt spine slightly dulled with fading to gilt frayed at spine ends with minor loss to corners overall a fine example 8vo [1911]. ***J.M.Barrie`s classic children`s book extended &developed in response to the success of both his 1906 book Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (illustrated by Arthur Rackham) and the play Peter Pan that ran from 1904; this edition features the first inclusion of Peter`s visit to Wendy Darling when she has grown up and married.
