Second edition (first date from 1534) of his masterpiece “Anglicae historiae”, considered an important source for knowledge of the reign of Henry VII. Edition especially known and appreciated for presenting, at the beginning of the text (f. a3), a beautiful woodcut with representations of fox hunting, dances, games, etc., by Hans Holbein. The two volumes form a bibliographic unit, but have different titles and contents. The first volume contains “Antiques of Lusitânia”, one of the most sought after works by Resende, a Dominican religious, intellectual and humanist, born in Évora, a pioneer in the field of archeology in Portugal. The second consists of a collection of several texts by the author, namely, the life of “Vincentivs levita et martyr”, the “Encomium Erasmi”, the “Urbis Lovaniensis Academia encomium”, various poems, speeches, epistles, etc. The two volumes are slightly trimmed and with slight browning, but in general very clean. Second edition, enlarged in relation to the first, published in the same year, consisting of only two volumes. This is also illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece (representing Lisbon and the Armada of Indias) and 14 folding engravings, copperplate print, portraits and views of strongholds in Africa and India, namely Goa, Daman, Diu, Chaul, Vasai (Baçaim), Mombassa, Kilwa Kisiwani, Sofala, etc. It also includes a larger world map (28x48 cm), with the conquests and discoveries of the Portuguese. Mr. Bradford's Sketches of country, character, and costume, in Portugal and Spain.- London: printed by William Savage, for John Booth, 1810.- [2], 8 p.: [13] gravuras coloridas; 36 cm.- E., The Reverend William Bradford (1780-1857) was a military chaplain and accompanied Wellington's forces in the Peninsular campaign against Napoleon's troops. His drawings were perfected and engraved by J. Clark to illustrate one of the most beautiful books on Portugal and Spain published in the 19th century. Variant of the 1809 edition, containing both parts in English. The first part (Sketches of the country...) is illustrated with a monochromatic frontispiece, copperplate print (etching and stipple) and 40 hand-coloured aquatints, representing, above all, popular costumes and views of localities. The second part (Sketches of military costume...), with its own title page, includes 13 aquatints, also hand-coloured, with Portuguese, French and Spanish military uniforms. The engravings exactly match the index (List of plates) that appears on the second sheet (after the main title page). Clean copy, slightly cropped (marbled edges). The plates have great freshness and the original cellophane separators. 19th century binding, full crushed sheepskin, with light wear, triple gold fillet and blind tooling roll, squared on the covers and golden roll on the squares, with new endpapers in plain wrought paper. Between 1458 and 1453 Fr. Pelbartus studied Theology at the University of Cracow, having left an extensive number of works published from 1483 onwards. The edition does not have a title page, as is usual in this period, with only a summary of the title and the index on the first page. On the other hand, at the end, it presents an extensive colophon: ...Impe[n]sis sumptibus prouidi viri Joannis Rynman de Oringaw in imgsali oppido Hagenaw: p[er] industru[m] Henricu[m] Gran [...] Anno salutis nostre Millesimo q[ui]gentesimo nono. iij. die Spte[m]bris. Fr. Luís de Sousa (1555-1632), whose secular name is Manuel de Sousa Coutinho, was born in Santarém. He was around 20 years old when he was captured by privateers off Sardinia and imprisoned for two years in Algiers, where he met Cervantes. In 1577 he was freed and in 1583 he married D. Madalena de Vilhena, with whom he lived in Spain and traveled to South America (Panama and Peru). In 1614, the two decided to enter the religious life, him joining to the Convent of St. Dominic of Benfica and she to the Convent of Sacrament in Lisbon. Fr. Luís was the chief chronicler of his order and is considered one of the most brilliant authors of the Portuguese language. Don Fr. Bartolomeu dos Mártires, O.P. (1514-1590), Archbishop of Braga, a prominent figure in the Portuguese Church of the 16th century, was beatified by Pope John Paul II and, in 2016, canonized by Pope Francis. The copy, very cropped, preserves, in addition to the engraved title, the rare portrait of the Saint, signed Ioan Schorkens fecit (Ernesto Soares, Dictionary, 389) with several restorations to wormholes, which indicates the provenance of another copy. First preliminary sheet with reinforced inner margin; second preliminary sheet with an oval stamp or seal (27 mm) that is repeated twice on the first sheet of text. Otherwise, a clean and solid copy. Ex-libris of AGC on the back cover and of Cândido Xavier da Costa, on the free endpaper. Stamp by T. Norton and former ownership inscription of Joseph Fernandes Braga, on the engraved title. Binding from the first half of the 20th century, in full red sheepskin, with elaborate gold tooling on the covers (multiple ornamental borders) and on the amateur spine: roll on the squareds andgilt edge on the top. Bowyer, 1803.- [4], 40 p.: 24 gravuras color.; 45 cm.- E., Luigi Mayer (1755-1803) was born in Rome, but worked in London under the protection of Sir Robert Ainslie, the United Kingdom's ambassador to Turkey between 1776 and 1792. The vast majority of his drawings were the result of commissions from Ainslie, making Mayer one of the first artists to represent the Ottoman Empire as the main theme of his extensive work. Bilingual edition, in English and French, illustrated with 24 hand-coloured aquatints, accompanied by the respective explanatory texts and an index in both languages, on the last page. Engraving No. 20 with two small cuts on the lower edge, without lack of support. Offering inscription, dated 1825, on the third free endpaper. Very clean copy with wide margins, retaining the original cellophane separators in all engravings. Contemporary binding, fully fine vellum, with some wear, conserving the original marbled endpapers; double romantic ornamental borders on both covers and gold tooling of the title on the upper cover; smooth spine and gilt edge. The last group of 16 sheets includes the “Repertorio das materias que se conteem nas seis partes das leis extravagantes”. The copy does not include the «Annotações sobre as ordenações dos cinqvo livros, que pelas leis extrauagantes são revogadas ou interpretadas» (8 f., with its own title and independent pagination), which are sometimes bound at the end, but which constitute an autonomous species. (see BN, 404). Copy slightly manipulated, with slight browning and title page restored in the lower outer corner, without affecting the text; frequent annotations and underlining of the time, with marginalia marred by excessive trimming; occasional minor stains. LANDMANN, George.- Historical, military and picturesque observations on Portugal, illustrated by seventy-five coloured plates, including authentic plans of the sieges and battles fought in the Peninsula during the late war.- London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1818.- 2 vols.: il.; 37 cm.- E., The author (1779-1854) was a lieutenant colonel in the British Army, with equal military rank in the Spanish Engineering Corps. The first volume aims to provide an overview of the history of Portugal, while the second seeks to convey a wide range of local information that may be useful, on the one hand, for military purposes, and on the other, to travelers and other readers. . The edition can be considered as one of the largest typographic companies, in its style and one of the most beautiful books in the foreign bibliography on Portugal, in the 19th century. The first volume (XIV, 607 p.) is illustrated with four hand-coloured watercolours, representing as many degrees of torture by the Inquisition, two numismatic engravings and 14 watercolour maps and plans of cities and troop movements. The second volume (XVI, 203 p.) includes another 55 beautiful aquatints from Portuguese localities, as well as a double engraving of Alcácer do Sal, not registered in the index, but referred to by Tooley as nº 25. All engravings are hand-coloured and of great aesthetic effect, some being doubles. In general, they are all very clean, fresh and neatly folded. A few pages of text with very slight moisture stains not affecting the engravings. Contemporary green morocco half-bindings with covers covered with a canvas similar to the spine and new endpapers. The copies rarely appear on the market, especially when complete like this one. Augustinho, da congregação de sancta Cruz | de Coimbra.- Foi ympresso em Lixboa no mosteiro de Sam Vicente de fora per Ioam fernandez, ympressor de libros Anno de1579.- 143 [i é 145], [3, 7] f.; 19 cm.- E., Second edition of this regiment of the Congregation of the Order of the Holy Cross, reformed from the original edition published in 1563, in Santa Cruz. The text is divided into two parts: the first deals with general ceremonies (f. 3v. to f. 115v.); the second translation of “de alguns tempos & dias especiaes” (f. 115r. to f. 145v.). The Index follows, in two sheets and a last sheet with just the colophon in front. The seven final pages contain the following texts: De como se faz dia dos martyres; De como se faz quando a cidade vemao mosteiro; De como se faz quando a universidade vemao mosteiro; De como se faz o anniversario dos reis. Title page slightly used, with old ownership inscription scratched on the upper margin and small imperfections; last page with several old white inscriptions on the verso and stain with slight abrasion. 20th century (1st half?) full sheepskin binding with patina and gilt decoration on the spine and squares. The translator was Fernando José de Portugal e Castro (1752-1817), 1st Count of Aguiar and 14th Viceroy of Brazil. Bilingual edition with texts on facing pages and extensive notes. Complete copy, very clean, of the unjustified special run, printed on heavy paper (“grand papier”). The edition presents the following collation, a little confusing: engraved title page (blank verso); Prefacção (p. [I] to VII, with blank verso); Ensaios Moraes... (false title, 1 f. unpaged with blank verso); Advertências (p. [III], IV, V, with blank verso); Epistola I. (p. [VII], VIII and IX); on verso (not paginated), Epistola I., followed by Epistola I. (not paginated, but p. [3]), followed by the rest of the text (p. 4 to 203, on verso, Errata). Schomburgk and John Edward Taylor.- London: David Bogue, 1849.- 2 vols.: il.; 22 cm.- E., First edition in English, after the very rare original German edition, limited to 100 copies for gifts. Prince Adalbert von Preussen (1811-1873) offers us a description of Brazil in the 1840s, with an expedition to the Amazon where he made contact with indigenous tribes. The first volume includes an introduction by Alexander von Humboldt and is illustrated with a lithograph close to the title page, depicting the author in explorer's garb and a map of the Bay of Rio de Janeiro (p. 210/211). The second, with two folding maps: one of the state of Rio de Janeiro (next to the title page) and another of the Amazon delta (p. 160/161). The collation of each volume is as follows: I - XVI, 338 p.: 1 engraving, 1 map; II - V, [1 br.], 337, [1] p.: 2 unfolding maps. The translation was, in fact, carried out by Fr. João Pinto OSB, and by him dedicated to the General of the Order. It was reprinted in Coimbra, by Nicolau Carvalho, in 1632. It includes, on the title page, a small engraving of the saint repeated on the last folio above the printer's mark. On the verso, a composition of six xilographic plates, four of which were used in the princeps edition of “Os Lusíadas” (including the pediment with the pelican facing the viewer’s left). Copy a little cropped (washed?), with old manuscript ownership on the title page: [illegible] from the collegio of St. Joseph Discalced Carmelites. Last sheet with reconstructed margins; slight tidal stain on the lower outer corner of the first leaves. Overall, however, a clean, solid, and complete copy. Two old handwritten belongings on title page. Otherwise, a copy slightly cropped but very clean. Contemporary full sheepskin binding, with new endpapers in marbled paper. The work is attributed, although not consensually, to Francisco Vásquez, born in Ciudad Rodrigo. Copy with browning, excessively trimmed, with occasional damage to some claims and signatures. Title page with deep restorations on the outer and inner margins (reinforcement on the verso) and on the imprint without loss of support. Sheet 145 (T1) replaced with sheet 152 (T8). Some leaves slightly frail, especially on the inner margin. Full sheepskin recent binding with blind tooling on the covers and spine, surely from the workshop of master Império Graça, with an engraving of the title “PRIMALEON” and the date “1598” on the front cover.
