Although Mandelshtam is known primarily as a poet, Egipetskaya marka stands out as his only major creative work written during the "poetic silence" of 1925 to 1930 during which time Mandelshtam was banned from publishing any original work in the Soviet Union. Vladimir Nabokov called the author "a wonderful poet, the greatest poet among those trying to survive under the Soviets."
