(60.5 x 46.5cm.); together with War Vessels, circa 1770 , assumed to be Chapman, 50 engraved plates of various sizes depicting naval diagrams (numbered I-XXVI), four signed F. Ringheim and one each by E. Henning and K.R ., many folding, contemporary half calf ( some wear ) -- 20½ x 31½in. (52 x 80cm.) Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Black Bear and Sugar Maple" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published in the limited edition collection of philatelic proofcards issued by Fleetwood and the National Audubon Society for the Wildlife of the 50 States. Outgoing and inquisitive, Black Bears delight sightseers in many North American woodlands. They clown and cavort, beg for hand-outs and manage to survive, even though civilization encroaches on their territory. Smokey, the number one supporter of fire prevention in America, was a Black Bear cub when he was rescued from a New Mexico forest fire in 1951. When full-grown, Smokey became a resident of Washington, D.C.'s National Zoological Park. Not all Black Bears are as trustworthy as Smokey however, and, while they will docilely take sweets from human hands, they are just as capable of becoming aggressive. When not eating goodies offered by sightseers, Black Bears are primarily vegetarians. They eat berries and roots with only an occasional treat of rodents, ants or fresh meat. All this food insulates the Black Bear for a long winter's nap. From October to May, they sleep in caves or hollow logs. Females are roused from their lazy slumbers by the birth of cubs, usually twins, born in midwinter. The babies huddle against their mothers while they nurse until spring brings good weather and their first chance to discover the world. Mom teaches the cubs to climb trees like the Sugar Maple, chosen as West Virginia's state tree. She gently gives them lessons in hunting and cuffs them when they disobey. Cute, and just asking to be cuddled, Black Bear cubs captured Teddy Roosevelt's heart and inspired the ever-popular Teddy Bear that many young children now treasure. Image Size: 11.75 x 14.25 in. Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989) "Manhattan Skyline" Exhibited Artist Proof Lithograph. Exhibition labels "Dali in Manhattan April 20- May 1 2002" and "Dali 100 Years, San Francisco CA May 11-30 2004, Fort Worth TX June 10-27, 2004" attached verso. This is an artist's proof of a lithograph by Salvador Dali entitled "Manhattan Skyline". It is marked 'EA' in the lower left part of the lithograph and signed by Dali in the lower right margin. 'EA' stand for "epreuve d'artiste", a French term for artist's proof. An artist's proof was usually one of the first ten to twenty copies of a lithograph to come off the press, and they all belonged to the artist. An artist's proof was not numbered and tended to be of higher quality than the printings of the numbered edition. Since the first copies were reserved for the artist, the artist would typically keep some and give the rest to family and friends. For "Manhattan Skyline", there were only 20 artist proofs on Arches and 20 artist proofs on Japon, from a total edition of 290. It was printed by Torrents in Barcelona, and published by Levine and Levine in 1977. Framed and matted. Salvador Dali was a leading proponent of Surrealism, the 20-century avant-garde movement that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious through strange, dream-like imagery. In addition to meticulously painting fantastic compositions, such as "The Accommodations of Desire" (1929) and the melting clocks in his famed "The Persistence of Memory" (1931), Dali was a prolific writer and filmmaker and cultivated an eccentric public persona with his flamboyant mustache, pet ocelot, and outlandish quips and behavior. MORRISON, ROBERT (1782-1834) A DICTIONARY OF THE CHINESE LANGUAGE (19th century) in three parts, printed in Macao at the Honourable East India Company Press by P.P. Thomas and later published and sold by Black, Parbury and Allen, Booksellers, Leadenhall Street in London, first edition, 1815-1823. Part one comprising of three volumes (second volume missing); part one published in 1815, part two published in 1822, part three published in 1823; part two comprising of two volumes, first one published in 1819, second part published in 1820, part three comprises of one volume published in 1822. (5) Each stamped on the front cover with the publishing year in black, bound in grey/ pale green cloth, spine labels illegible and deteriorated. Rev. Robert Morrison (1782-1834) of the London Missionary Society, studied Chinese and arrived in Canton in 1807 where he concealed his identity, as Protestant missionaries were disapproved of by The East India Company. However, the E.I.C. realised the importance of Morrison's in-depth research into the Chinese language and backed his proposal to print a comprehensive Chinese dictionary. A printing press and a printer (P.P. Thomas) were set up in Macao and the volumes were published 1815-1823. The E.I.C. continued to oppose his missionary activities and although he was taken on as interpreter in in Lord Amhursts abortive mission to Peking (Beijing). The dictionary remains his outstanding achievement.
