Volume one is a first issue, retaining the chromolithographic plates with the imprints of Ackerman, Bowen or Duval, and the unabbreviated title page.An excellent association. Historia tragicomica de Don Henrique de Castro, [probable] 1st edition, Paris: Vendense... en la tienda de la viuda de Matias Guillemot, 1617, engraved title and portrait plate (?a8 verso), woodcut initials, lacks errata leaf at end (3K3), a few old brown ink pen scratches to title and foremargin and lower margins repaired close to plate impression, some old ink marginalia and underscoring to Book 1, mostly in French, some spotting and old damp staining at front and rear, edges stained red, 19th-century calf with leather spine label, rubbed, 8vo (17 x 10.5cm) This is generally regarded as the first novel to be set in Spanish America. There is one suggestion of an edition of 1612, which is believed to be a ghost and based on a misreading of this 1617 edition. This 1617 edition is therefore considered by all the authorities to be the first edition, with no proven evidence of the existence of a 1612 edition.
